SSR Medical Examination — What to Expect

The SSR medical is conducted by Navy Medical Officers. It tests overall physical fitness, eyesight, hearing, dental health, and absence of any disqualifying medical conditions. Candidates found temporarily unfit may be referred for a review medical after treatment. Those declared permanently unfit are discharged from the selection process.

Common Medical Standards for SSR

• Height: Minimum 157 cm (relaxation for candidates from hill/tribal areas)
• Weight: Proportionate to height and age
• Eyesight: 6/6 (with or without glasses as per Navy standards)
• Colour Vision: Must be normal (CP-I or CP-II as per trade)
• Dental: No major untreated dental issues

Documents to Carry for Medical

Carry all original educational certificates, Aadhaar card, caste certificate (if applicable), domicile certificate, and passport-size photographs. The Navy strictly verifies all original documents at the medical stage. Carry neat printouts — torn or smudged admit cards may not be accepted.

Career in Indian Navy SSR

SSR (Senior Secondary Recruit) is one of the most sought-after defence jobs. SSRs serve in various branches of the Navy — Engine Room Artificer, Electrical, Weaponry, etc. After completing service, they are eligible for promotion to Petty Officer and above based on performance and examinations. The starting gross pay is approximately ₹21,700 per month (Agniveer SSR) under the Agnipath scheme.
