1,191 Railway Apprentice Posts and One Selection Rule That Changes Everything

South East Central Railway's 2026 apprentice recruitment has one feature that separates it from almost every other government recruitment you will read about this year: there is no exam. Not a preliminary exam, not a mains, not a skill test. The only thing that determines whether you get an apprenticeship at SECR Bilaspur is the average of your Class 10 percentage and your ITI percentage — 50% weightage each. If you scored 75% in Class 10 and 80% in your ITI, your merit score is 77.5%. That number is compared against every other applicant who chose the same trade. The highest scores fill the vacancies, documents are verified, medical examination is conducted, and training begins. No preparation required beyond your academic record. No coaching center can help. The result of your school and polytechnic years is what determines the outcome.

What South East Central Railway Is and Why Bilaspur Matters

South East Central Railway (SECR) is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways, headquartered in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. The zone covers a network that stretches through Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra — including major junctions like Bilaspur, Raipur, Nagpur, Raigarh, and Gondia. The Bilaspur Workshop is one of the oldest and most significant railway repair workshops in central India — it handles locomotive maintenance, wagon repairs, and signal/electrical equipment overhaul. Apprentices at SECR Bilaspur train in these workshops, not in classrooms. When you are posted as a Fitter apprentice, you are in the actual workshop floor, working on actual railway components under supervision. When you are a COPA apprentice, you are in the data center or IT department handling actual railway systems. This is hands-on technical training at a real operational railway facility — not a theoretical certification program.

COPA Has 350 Posts — The Biggest Single Trade in This Entire Recruitment

Computer Operator & Programming Assistant is the dominant trade in this notification with 350 posts out of 1,191 total — nearly 30% of all vacancies in a single trade. If you completed your ITI in COPA from a recognized institution and passed Class 10 with 50% or more, this is your direct entry into railway training. COPA apprentices at SECR work in the computerized reservation centers, the freight operations management system, the stores and inventory system, and the accounts and payroll systems. Railway IT systems run 24/7 and COPA-trained apprentices are the people who keep those systems operational at the ground level. The SECR has one of the highest COPA post counts among all railway zones in recent apprentice recruitments — which makes this a significant opportunity for the large number of ITI COPA graduates in the region who have historically had fewer options than electrical or mechanical ITI holders.

The 20% Group D Quota — Why This Apprenticeship Has Long-Term Strategic Value

Completing an Act Apprenticeship at a Central Government establishment like SECR gives you a specific advantage in future railway recruitment: a 20% reserved quota in Level-1 (Group D) railway posts for apprenticeship completers. This quota is separate from the general merit list — apprenticeship completers compete in a dedicated pool against each other, not against the general candidates. Additionally, completers are exempt from the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) that all other Group D candidates must clear. For candidates who are shorter or physically less fit, this exemption removes one of the most common elimination points in Group D selection. Put these two benefits together: if your long-term goal is a permanent Level-1 railway job, completing a railway apprenticeship is one of the most direct paths to it. The 1-year training stipend becomes less important than the positioning it gives you for the next step.

Trade-wise Breakdown — Which Trades Have the Most Openings

Fitter (223 posts) and Electrician (206 posts) are the next largest trades after COPA, reflecting the core needs of a railway workshop — mechanical assembly, maintenance, and electrical work are the backbone of any railway operation. Wireman (125 posts) covers the installation and maintenance of electrical wiring in railway coaches, stations, and yard equipment. Painter (41 posts) covers coach and infrastructure painting — a trade often overlooked but consistently present in railway apprentice notifications. RAC Mechanic (40 posts) — Refrigeration and Air Conditioning — is a growing trade given the expansion of air-conditioned coaches across Indian Railways. Carpenter (38 posts) covers coach interior work and station infrastructure. Steno English (36 posts) and Steno Hindi (25 posts) are for candidates with relevant shorthand and typing skills. Plumber (30 posts) and Welder (20 posts) round out the major trades. If your ITI trade is not in this list, check the full official notification — there are additional specialized trades making up the remaining posts.

The Application Process — What NAPS Registration Actually Requires

SECR Bilaspur Apprentice applications go through the central government portal at apprenticeshipindia.gov.in (NAPS — National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme). There is no fee whatsoever — applying costs you nothing across all categories. For first-time applicants: register on NAPS with your Aadhaar-linked details, your ITI trade information, and your educational qualification. Search for "South East Central Railway" or "SECR Bilaspur" under the Establishment section, apply against the 2026-27 batch. The system will ask you to enter your Class 10 percentage and ITI percentage — these are the numbers that determine your merit position. Enter them accurately; any discrepancy will be caught at Document Verification and will result in cancellation. The deadline is 11 June 2026. Since this is a merit-based selection, there is no advantage to applying early versus late — but do not miss the deadline, as there is no extension for this type of recruitment.
