Full Details / पूरी जानकारी

What the India Post GDS Second Merit List Means

India Post released the Second Merit List for GDS (Gramin Dak Sevak) 2026 recruitment. This is not a written exam result — India Post selects GDS candidates purely on the basis of Class 10 (Matriculation) marks. No interview, no physical test, no written exam. If your 10th marks are high enough relative to other applicants in your state circle and division, you get selected.

The Second Merit List is released for positions that remained vacant after the First Merit List — either because shortlisted candidates from List 1 did not accept the offer, or because new vacancies opened up. If your name was not in the First Merit List, your next chance was this Second Merit List. A Third Merit List is typically released after this for any remaining vacancies.

What Selected Candidates Must Do Now — Document Verification

If your name appears in the Second Merit List, the next step is Document Verification (DV). India Post will issue you a DV call letter specifying the date, time, and venue. Do not miss this — failure to appear for DV at the scheduled time means your candidature is cancelled.

Documents you must bring to DV (originals + photocopies of each):

  • Class 10 Marksheet and Passing Certificate — the primary basis of your selection
  • Date of Birth certificate — 10th admit card or birth certificate
  • Domicile / Residence Certificate — from your district/tehsil office
  • Category Certificate — SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS (if applicable, from authorized officer)
  • Computer knowledge certificate — O Level / CCC or BCA/B.Sc CS degree (mandatory for most GDS posts)
  • Aadhar Card / Voter ID — identity proof
  • Recent passport-size photographs — 4–6 copies
  • Bank account details — for salary disbursement

GDS Posts — What You'll Actually Do

GDS covers three post types: BPM (Branch Postmaster), ABPM (Assistant Branch Postmaster), and Dak Sevak. The work varies slightly:

Branch Postmaster (BPM): Runs the Gram Dak Sewa branch — manages mail delivery, India Post savings accounts, money orders, postal schemes. You're essentially the post office in-charge for a village. BPM carries the most responsibility and the highest Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA).

ABPM / Dak Sevak: Assists the BPM — mail delivery, collection, financial services. Less administrative responsibility than BPM.

GDS is a part-time service post — technically 4 hours of work per day (though in practice it often runs longer). You receive TRCA (Time Related Continuity Allowance) instead of a regular salary — starting around ₹10,000–₹14,500 per month depending on the post and category.

What If Your Name Is Not in the Second Merit List

Don't give up yet. India Post typically releases a Third Merit List if vacancies still exist after the second round. Keep checking indiapostgdsonline.gov.in regularly. Also verify that your application details (10th marks entered, category, state circle preference) were correct — if there was a discrepancy in marks submitted, it could have affected your rank.

If you miss out even after three lists, the marks cutoff for the next GDS recruitment cycle typically shifts based on vacancy count and applicant pool. Keep your 10th marksheet ready and re-apply for the next cycle notification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I apply for multiple circles in GDS?

Yes. In India Post GDS recruitment, candidates can apply to multiple state postal circles in a single application cycle. Separate merit lists are published for each circle. However, if selected in more than one circle, you must choose one and inform the others — you cannot join multiple circles simultaneously.

Q: Is GDS a permanent government job?

GDS is an Extra-Departmental (ED) employee status — not a regular Central Government civil servant. However, GDS employees receive TRCA, are covered by government insurance schemes, and can eventually be absorbed into regular postal department positions through departmental exams. Job security is high in practice, though the legal status differs from a permanent government employee.

Q: How soon does joining happen after Document Verification?

After successful DV and medical clearance (basic fitness check), joining orders are issued within 4–8 weeks. The exact timeline depends on your circle's administrative process. Keep all your documents ready so you don't cause delays from your end.
