KVS Class 1 Admission 2026 — How the Lottery Works
Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) has released the First Merit List for Class 1 and Balvatika admissions 2026. Unlike competitive exams where marks decide everything, KVS Class 1 admissions use a category-based priority system followed by a computerized lottery draw for oversubscribed categories. No exam, no interview — it's purely based on the child's category priority and then a random draw.
KVS Class 1 admission categories (in priority order):
- Category I: Children of transferable central government employees (and their wards)
- Category II: Children of retired/deceased central government employees
- Category III: Children of ex-servicemen
- Category IV: Children of Central PSU employees, single-girl child (under RTE)
- Category V: Children of state government employees and other civilians
Within each oversubscribed category, a computerized lottery is conducted. The First List is the result of this process — children whose numbers were drawn first.
If Your Child's Name Is in the First List
You have a specific window (typically 7–10 days from list publication date) to report to the Kendriya Vidyalaya and complete admission formalities. Missing this window cancels your child's seat, and it goes to the next child in line.
Documents required for admission:
- Birth certificate (municipality/hospital issued) — proof that child is between 5 and 7 years old as on March 31
- Category certificate (service certificate from employer for Category I/II, ex-serviceman certificate for Category III)
- Aadhar card of child and parent
- Previous school report card (if applicable)
- Address proof
- 4 passport-size photographs of the child
- Transfer certificate (TC) from previous school if applicable
Second List (April 16) and Third List (April 21)
If your child's name is not in the First List, there are two more chances. The Second List is released on April 16, 2026, and the Third List on April 21, 2026. These cover seats that became available because First/Second list families did not complete admission formalities in time.
Important: if your child's name appears in a subsequent list, the same documents and same admission window applies. Check the KVS official website (kvsangathan.nic.in) regularly for updates on the schedule for your specific KV school.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can we apply to multiple KV schools?
Yes — you can apply to up to 3 Kendriya Vidyalayas (within reasonable proximity to your area). If selected in multiple schools, you must confirm admission in one and withdraw from others. Each KV manages its own lottery independently.
Q: What if no list includes our child this year?
Seats remaining unfilled after all three lists go through a waitlist process managed by the KV Principal. If you're on the waitlist, visit the school directly after the Third List date — sometimes seats open up last-minute due to withdrawals. If not selected this year, the same application process opens again next March for the 2027 batch.
Q: Is there any advantage for siblings already studying in KV?
Yes. Siblings of children currently enrolled in the same KV are given priority within their respective categories. This is not a separate category but gives priority within the same priority group through the lottery system. Mention existing sibling enrollment clearly in your application.
