Bihar Domicile — Who Needs It?

Bihar domicile is required only to claim reserved category (OBC/EBC/BC/SC/ST/female) benefits. A candidate from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, or any other state can apply in the unreserved (General/UR) category without any domicile requirement. However:

  • OBC certificate for Bihar state reservation must be a Bihar state OBC certificate (not central OBC list or another state OBC certificate)
  • Female candidates claiming age relaxation must be Bihar domicile
  • SC/ST certificate must be Bihar state issued

Myths vs Facts

Common MythFact
"Need 60% marks to apply for BAS"False. No minimum percentage — any graduate qualifies.
"Only Bihar residents can apply for BPSC"False. UR candidates from any state can apply without domicile.
"Arts graduates cannot apply"False. Any degree from any stream is accepted.
"PT score is added to final merit"False. PT only qualifies you for Mains; PT marks are NOT counted.
"BPSC requires physical fitness test"False for most posts. BPS (Police) requires a medical after final selection; no physical test during the exam.
"OBC from another state valid for Bihar reservation"False. Must hold Bihar state OBC/EBC/BC certificate.
"Attempting all 150 PT questions is always better"False. With ¼ negative marking, wrong answers cost you; accuracy beats coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I apply if my final year results are not yet declared?

BPSC generally requires the qualifying degree to be completed. However, some notifications allow "appeared" candidates. Check the official notification for BPSC 72nd — if it allows appearing candidates, you must produce the degree certificate before the Mains interview stage.

Q: How many attempts are allowed for BPSC?

BPSC does not have an attempt limit — you can apply as long as you are within the age limit. If the upper age for your category is 40, you can attempt every BPSC exam until you turn 40.

Q: Does BPSC require proof of domicile for General category?

No. UR/General category candidates do not need a domicile certificate. Only those claiming category-based age relaxation or reserved vacancies need Bihar domicile proof.

Q: What if I belong to EWS? Is there an income limit?

EWS (Economically Weaker Section) requires annual family income below ₹8 lakh and no land holding above 5 acres. EWS certificate must be issued by the competent authority (SDM/Tehsildar) within the current financial year.

Q: Application date?

Notification: 07 May 2026. Application: 07–31 May 2026. Apply at the official BPSC website (bpsc.bih.nic.in).

Post-Wise Vacancy Distribution

The 1,230 posts span Bihar Administrative Service, Bihar Police Service, and other Group A/B services. The highest-demand posts by vacancy count:

Service/PostApprox. VacanciesNotes
Bihar Administrative Service (BAS)~320Highest prestige; SDM-level entry
Bihar Police Service (BPS)~180DSP-level entry; physical standard required
Bihar Finance Service~150Treasury/account management roles
Bihar Educational Service~90Principal, DEO-level roles
Bihar Planning Service~60District planning office roles
Other Group B Services~430Various departments — consolidated in notification

Post allocation among services is finalized based on Mains + Interview performance. Candidates do not apply separately for individual posts — they give service preferences during the Mains application stage.

Bihar Domicile — Who Qualifies

Bihar domicile rules for BPSC 72nd CCE:

  • Residents: Candidates born in Bihar or who have been ordinary residents of Bihar for at least 10 consecutive years qualify as Bihar domicile holders
  • Women (married): A woman who has married a permanent resident of Bihar is treated as a Bihar domicile candidate — this allows her to claim Bihar SC/ST/OBC reservation even if she was originally from another state
  • Unreserved category: Even UR candidates can apply without Bihar domicile — there is no domicile restriction for UR/EWS candidates in BPSC exams. Domicile matters primarily for reservation categories

Physical Standard — Bihar Police Service Posts

For Bihar Police Service (DSP-level) posts, which are part of the 1,230 vacancies, a physical standard is required at the interview stage:

CategoryHeightChest (Unexpanded / Expanded)
Male — General/OBC/EWS165 cm84 cm / 89 cm
Male — SC/ST160 cm79 cm / 84 cm
Female — General/OBC/EWS155 cmN/A
Female — SC/ST150 cmN/A

This physical standard applies only to candidates who are allocated to Bihar Police Service posts — it does not apply to BAS, Finance, Educational, or other services.

Reservation Breakdown — Bihar Specific

CategoryReservation %Notes
Scheduled Caste (SC)16%As per Bihar SC list
Scheduled Tribe (ST)1%Bihar has very small ST population
Extremely Backward Class (EBC)18%Bihar-specific category — different from OBC Central list
Backward Class (BC)12%Corresponds to OBC in central list terminology
Backward Class — Women3%Exclusive reservation for BC women
Economically Weaker Section (EWS)10%Annual income below ₹8 lakh; no SC/ST/OBC membership
Unreserved (UR)40%

Note: Bihar uses "EBC" (Extremely Backward Class) and "BC" (Backward Class) terminology — these are broadly equivalent to OBC in central government exams but are different lists. Your OBC Central List certificate does not automatically make you EBC or BC in Bihar. Get a Bihar-specific category certificate from the Bihar government.

Documents Required for Application / DV

  • Graduation certificate and all year marksheets (original + self-attested copies)
  • 10th certificate for date of birth proof (not Aadhaar alone)
  • Bihar domicile certificate — issued by SDM/Tehsildar of your district
  • Category certificate (EBC/BC/SC/ST/EWS) — from competent authority in Bihar
  • OBC/EBC Non-Creamy Layer certificate (for BC/EBC candidates) — not older than 1 year
  • Ex-serviceman Discharge Certificate (if applicable)
  • PH/disability certificate from a recognized medical board (if applicable)

Frequently Asked Questions (continued)

Q: My OBC certificate is from the Central Government list. Is it valid for BPSC?

Central OBC certificates are not directly applicable to BPSC. Bihar uses its own EBC and BC lists which differ from the Central OBC list. You need a Bihar State EBC or BC certificate. If your caste appears on the Bihar EBC/BC list, get the state-level certificate. If it does not, you may need to apply as UR.

Q: Can candidates from outside Bihar apply for BPSC 72nd CCE?

Yes. UR and EWS candidates from any state can apply — there is no domicile restriction for unreserved category seats. Only SC/ST/EBC/BC reservation benefits are restricted to Bihar domicile holders. Candidates from other states apply in UR or EWS category only.

Q: Is there an age relaxation for candidates who gave BPSC exams before?

No separate age relaxation for prior BPSC attempts. Standard age relaxation applies: OBC +3, SC/ST +5, PH +10 years over the base age of 40 (General). Candidates who missed the age limit in a previous cycle may still be within the age limit for BPSC 72nd CCE if they have remaining relaxation — check your exact date of birth against the cutoff.

Q: What is the cutoff date for age calculation?

Age is calculated as on 1 August 2025 (per BPSC 72nd CCE notification). You must be at least 21 and at most 40 (UR) as on that date. For reserved categories, add the relaxation: OBC (43), SC/ST (45), PH/UR (50).

Application Fee

Category Fee
General / UR / EWS₹600
SC / ST (Bihar)₹150
Female candidates₹150
PH / Divyangjan₹150
Payment ModeOnline — net banking / UPI / debit card

Examination Centers

BPSC Preliminary is conducted across all 38 district headquarters of Bihar. Candidates select their preferred examination center at the time of application. Assignment is generally honored — but BPSC reserves the right to change centers in case of logistical constraints. The Mains exam is typically held in Patna only.

Disability (PH) Eligibility — Key Points

  • PH candidates with at least 40% disability certified by a State Medical Board are eligible
  • Age relaxation: 10 additional years over the base limit (so UR PH candidates can apply up to age 50)
  • Scribes are provided for candidates with specific disabilities — apply for a scribe in the application form itself
  • PH candidates are exempt from the physical standard required for Bihar Police Service posts

How Marks Are Calculated — PT to Final Selection

Stage-wise progression:

  1. PT (Prelims): 150 questions, 150 marks, 2 hours. No negative marking. Cut-off declared separately for each category. Only shortlisted candidates proceed to Mains.
  2. Mains (Written): 4 papers — General Hindi (100 marks, qualifying), GS Paper I (300 marks), GS Paper II (300 marks), Optional (300 marks). Total 900 marks counted toward merit.
  3. Interview (Personality Test): 120 marks.
  4. Final Merit: Mains 900 + Interview 120 = 1020 marks total.

PT marks are NOT added to the final merit — PT is purely a screening stage. Your final rank depends entirely on Mains + Interview performance.

Common Disqualification Reasons

  • Category certificate not from Bihar competent authority (Central OBC used instead of Bihar EBC/BC)
  • OBC Non-Creamy Layer certificate older than 1 year at the time of DV
  • Graduation not from a UGC-recognized university
  • More than one application submitted (accidental duplicate registration)
  • Photograph not recent or not meeting BPSC specification (white background, recent, clearly visible face)

One-Time Registration (OTR)

BPSC has introduced One-Time Registration (OTR) for candidates. Register once on the BPSC OTR portal — your basic details, educational qualifications, and category information are saved permanently. For each new notification (like 72nd CCE), you apply using your OTR ID without re-entering the same details. This reduces form-filling errors and duplicate entries. If you have already registered for OTR in a previous BPSC exam, use the same credentials — do not create a new account.

Candidates should also note that BPSC does not allow form correction after the final submission date. Double-check your name spelling (must match 10th certificate exactly), date of birth, category, and optional subject choice before submitting. Even minor name discrepancies between the application and the certificate can trigger issues at the DV stage and require an affidavit or name change certificate from a court.

UR/EWS candidates ke liye domicile zaroorat nahi — sirf reservation categories mein domicile maayane rakhta hai.

Bihar Police Service ke liye Physical Standard

Sirf Bihar Police Service (DSP) posts ke liye physical standard hai: Male UR/OBC — 165 cm height, 84/89 cm chest. Male SC/ST — 160 cm, 79/84 cm. Female UR — 155 cm. BAS, Finance, ya anya services ke liye physical test nahi hota.

Nahi. Bihar apni EBC aur BC list use karta hai jo Central OBC list se alag hai. Bihar state-specific category certificate zaroori hai.

Haan — UR aur EWS mein koi bhi state ka candidate apply kar sakta hai. Reservation benefits sirf Bihar domicile holders ko milte hain.

Q: Age cutoff date kya hai?

Age calculation 1 August 2025 ke aadhar par hogi. UR ke liye maximum 40 saal. OBC — 43, SC/ST — 45, PH/UR — 50 saal.

Application Fee

General/UR/EWS: ₹600 | SC/ST/Female/PH: ₹150 | Payment: online (net banking, UPI, debit card)

Exam Centers

PT sabhi 38 district headquarters mein hota hai — candidate apna preferred center apply karte samay choose karta hai. Mains typically sirf Patna mein hota hai.

PH Eligibility

40%+ disability wale PH candidates eligible hain. Age relaxation +10 saal. Bihar Police Service posts ke physical standard se PH candidates exempt hain. Scribe ke liye application form mein hi apply karein.

Marks Calculation

PT sirf screening hai — PT marks final merit mein nahi jate. Final merit = Mains (900 marks) + Interview (120 marks) = 1020 marks total. GS Paper I: 300, GS Paper II: 300, Optional: 300, General Hindi: 100 (qualifying only).
