CRPF Constable Tradesman Syllabus 2026: PET, PST, CBT & Trade Test Pattern
The CRPF Constable Tradesman selection process has four stages — Physical Efficiency Test (PET), Physical Standard Test (PST), Computer Based Test (CBT), and Trade Test. Each stage is eliminatory. You clear one, move to the next. You fail one, you're out — regardless of how well you did earlier.
Here's the uncomfortable truth most coaching institutes don't say loudly: 60–70% of candidates fail at the PET/PST stage. The written test (CBT) is where preparation matters, but only if you've already cleared the physical. This article covers both — with exact numbers, not vague "practice running" advice.

Stage 1 — Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
PET is a race. It is qualifying in nature — no marks, just pass/fail. Clear it and proceed. Fail and go home.
| Event | Male Standard | Female Standard |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6 km Run | 6 minutes 30 seconds | 8 minutes 30 seconds |
| Long Jump | 11 feet (3.35 m) | 9 feet (2.74 m) |
| High Jump | 3.5 feet (1.07 m) | 3 feet (0.91 m) |
Race strategy for males: 6:30 for 1.6 km means roughly 4 minutes per km — that's a comfortable jogging pace for a fit person. But at the exam venue, nerves, unfamiliar track, and crowd cause candidates to either sprint and burn out, or jog too slowly. Practice running 1.6 km on a stopwatch at least 3 months before the PET. Target under 6:00 for a safe buffer. Long jump of 11 feet is easily achievable with 3–4 weeks of focused practice.
Who fails here: Candidates who prepared only for the written test, sedentary students who haven't exercised in months, and those who underestimate the run because they feel "fit enough". Don't be that person.
Stage 2 — Physical Standard Test (PST)
PST is measurements only. Height, chest (males), weight. No running. But the measurements are strict — if you're 1 cm short, you're out. There is no appeal.
Male Physical Standards
| Category | Height | Chest (Unexpanded) | Chest (Expanded) |
|---|---|---|---|
| General / OBC / SC / EWS | 170 cm | 80 cm | 85 cm (min 5 cm expansion) |
| ST / Gorkha / Garhwali / Kumaoni / Hill Tribes | 162.5 cm | 76 cm | 81 cm |
| NE States / Arunachal / Meghalaya / Mizoram / Manipur / Nagaland / Tripura / Sikkim / J&K Hill Tribes / Ladakh | 162.5 cm | 76 cm | 81 cm |
Female Physical Standards
| Category | Height |
|---|---|
| General / OBC / SC / EWS | 157 cm |
| ST / Hill Tribes / NE States | 150 cm |
Chest expansion tip: The 5 cm expansion from unexpanded to expanded is measured in a single breath. Practice deep chest breathing exercises — specifically the "hold-and-expand" technique. Swimmers and yoga practitioners typically have no issue here; gym-focused candidates without breathing exercises often fall just short.
Stage 3 — Computer Based Test (CBT)
The CBT is the only scored stage. Your rank in the final merit list is based entirely on CBT marks (Trade Test is qualifying). The exam has 100 questions across 4 subjects in 2 hours.
Note: The CBT exam pattern details (subject-wise question distribution, marking scheme) are based on the standard CRPF Tradesman pattern from previous recruitment cycles. Always verify from the official CRPF notification PDF before finalising your preparation plan, as exact question distribution can vary between recruitment cycles.
| Subject | Questions (approx) | Topic Focus |
|---|---|---|
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 25 | Analogy, Series, Classification, Coding, Direction, Blood Relations |
| General Knowledge & Awareness | 25 | History, Geography, Polity, Science, Current Affairs, Defence/CRPF specific |
| Elementary Mathematics | 25 | Arithmetic, Percentage, Ratio, Time-Work, Simple Geometry |
| General English / Hindi | 25 | Grammar basics, Vocabulary, Comprehension, Sentence correction |
The difficulty is at the 10th standard level. There is no negative marking (verify from notification — some cycles have had 0.25 or 0.50 deduction). The 2-hour window for 100 questions gives you 1.2 minutes per question, which is sufficient if you're not spending excessive time on Maths calculations.
CBT — Subject-wise Preparation Strategy
Reasoning (25 Qs): This is your fastest scoring section. Practice analogies, coding-decoding, and series until they're automatic. At 10th level, the patterns are limited. 50 practice questions daily for 30 days is enough to score 20+ here consistently.
General Knowledge (25 Qs): The most unpredictable section. For CRPF specifically, CRPF history, CRPF operations (particularly against LWE), and defence/paramilitary awareness questions appear. Cover Lucent's GK + last 6 months of current affairs + basic facts about CRPF (formation year, motto, headquarters).
Mathematics (25 Qs): Class 7–10 level. Focus on percentage, profit-loss, simple interest, ratio, and basic geometry. Avoid spending too much time on data interpretation if time is a constraint. Learn shortcut methods for percentage and ratio problems.
English/Hindi (25 Qs): Most candidates choose Hindi. Grammar, vocabulary, fill-in-the-blanks, and one comprehension passage. If you chose English on the form, focus on error detection and synonyms/antonyms. 15 minutes for this section is realistic.

Stage 4 — Trade Test
The Trade Test is qualifying only — no marks added to merit. You must demonstrate basic proficiency in your applied trade. Different trades have different tests:
| Trade | Trade Test Format | What's Tested |
|---|---|---|
| Driver (HMV/LMV) | Practical driving test | Vehicle handling, road sense, reverse parking, hill start; valid HMV/LMV licence required |
| MMV (Mechanical Motor Vehicle) | Practical + verbal | Engine fault diagnosis, basic maintenance, tyre change, oil/filter knowledge |
| Cook | Practical cooking | Prepare 2–3 standard dishes (dal, sabzi, rice, chapati) to specified quantity and quality |
| Tailor | Practical stitching | Sew a basic item (shirt, pant) within time limit; machine operation, hand finishing |
| Carpenter | Practical woodwork | Basic joint, furniture repair; use of tools (saw, chisel, plane) |
| Cobbler | Practical shoe repair | Sole attachment, stitching repair, basic resoling |
| Barber | Practical haircut | Standard military haircut, clean shave; speed and finish evaluated |
| Painter | Practical painting | Wall painting, surface preparation, neat edges, brush control |
| Bugler / Brass Band / Pipe Band | Instrument performance | Play designated tunes on respective instrument; tested by panel |
| Washer Man / Water Carrier / Mali / Safai Karmchari / Hair Dresser | Practical task | Trade-specific tasks evaluated by recruitment panel |
