Gram Pradhan Kya Hota Hai – Powers, Honorarium & Panchayat Election
The Gram Pradhan (also called Sarpanch in Rajasthan, Panchayat President in some southern states) is the elected head of the Gram Panchayat — India's smallest unit of democratic governance. Unlike every other officer in this series, the Gram Pradhan is not appointed or recruited: they are elected by the villagers every 5 years. They are not government employees — they receive a monthly honorarium (maanetari), not a salary.
But calling the Gram Pradhan "just an elected representative" dramatically undersells the role. A Gram Pradhan controls the implementation of MGNREGS, PM Awas Yojana, toilets under Swachh Bharat, and Jal Jeevan Mission in their village. The decisions they make — or don't make — directly determine whether development money reaches the village or disappears in paperwork.
