Educational Qualification

You need a B.E. or B.Tech degree from a recognized university in one of these three branches:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering (including Electrical & Electronics)
  • Mechanical Engineering

The degree must be from a UGC-recognized university or AICTE-approved institution. A final-year student waiting for results is not eligible — you must have a complete degree before the application deadline of 20 May 2026.

Common doubt: Can an Electronics & Communication or Computer Science engineer apply? No — only Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical are specified in the official notification. Do not apply under a different branch.

Medical Standards

You must be in good physical and mental health. Key disqualifying conditions include:

Nationality

Candidates must be Indian citizens. Citizens of Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibetan refugees settled in India before 1 January 1962 may also be eligible subject to a security clearance certificate.

Documents needed at the time of application: Scanned photograph (JPEG, 20–50 KB), scanned signature (JPEG, 10–30 KB), valid email ID and mobile number, Class 10 certificate (for age proof), engineering degree certificate, caste/EWS certificate (if applicable).

OBC Non-Creamy Layer — What It Means and What Proof You Need

If you are applying under OBC category and want the 3-year age relaxation and fee exemption (note: ITBP charges ₹400 for OBC, not exempt), you must submit an OBC Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) certificate. Here is exactly what is required:

  • Issued by: SDM/Tehsildar/District Magistrate — must be a competent authority
  • Validity: OBC NCL certificate must not be older than 1 year from the date of application
  • Income limit: Combined family income must be below ₹8 lakh per annum (from all sources, excluding income from cultivation of land)
  • Format: As per the format specified by the Government of India (available on the official ITBP portal)

If your family income exceeds ₹8 lakh/year, you fall in the Creamy Layer and are treated as General category — no relaxation applies.

EWS Certificate — Who Qualifies and What to Arrange

EWS (Economically Weaker Section) candidates pay ₹400 fee but may be eligible for reservation and other benefits. EWS certificate requirements:

  • Family gross annual income below ₹8 lakh from all sources
  • Family does not own more than 5 acres of agricultural land
  • No residential plot of 100 sq. yards or more in notified municipalities

Common Eligibility Doubts — Answered

My B.Tech is from a state university that is not NAAC/NBA accredited. Am I eligible?
The requirement is a degree from a "recognized university" — this means the university must be recognized by UGC under Section 2(f) or 12(B) of the UGC Act. NAAC/NBA accreditation is not required. Most state universities in India are UGC-recognized. If in doubt, check whether your university appears on the UGC website's recognized university list.

I completed B.Tech via distance/open education. Am I eligible?
Engineering degrees through distance education are generally NOT accepted for technical government posts unless the degree is specifically recognized by the UGC Distance Education Bureau (DEB). A regular full-time B.E./B.Tech from a UGC/AICTE-recognized institution is the standard requirement. Check the official notification for explicit clarification.

I have a B.Tech in Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE). Is that accepted under Electrical Engineering?
Typically yes — EEE is treated as equivalent to Electrical Engineering in government recruitment. The official notification will specify whether EEE is included. If not explicitly listed, apply only under the branches exactly named.

Can I apply if my current age is exactly 30 years 0 months on the cutoff date?
Yes. "30 years" means you must not have completed your 31st birthday as of the cutoff date (11 May 2026). If you turn exactly 30 on 11 May 2026, you are eligible.

Physical Test — What Actually Happens on PST Day

The PST is typically conducted at a designated centre. Here is what the process looks like:

  1. Report to the venue with your admit card and original documents
  2. Document verification — identity check against application form
  3. Height measurement — standing barefoot against a measuring rod
  4. Weight measurement — standard weighing scale
  5. Chest measurement (male candidates only) — measured at rest and after full expansion using a standard measuring tape; 5 cm expansion is mandatory
  6. If you meet all three standards, you proceed to PET on the same day or the next
  7. If you fail any measurement, you are given one chance for re-measurement before being eliminated

Character & Antecedents Verification — What It Involves

After you are provisionally selected, ITBP initiates a background verification through the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and state police. This is a standard process for all paramilitary and central government Group A appointments. Here is what gets verified:

  • Criminal record check — any FIR, charge sheet, or conviction disqualifies
  • Family background — immediate family members' associations are checked
  • Educational credentials — degree and certificates are verified with issuing institutions
  • Address history — all addresses mentioned in your application form are physically verified
  • Character references — your college/employer may be contacted

This process takes 4–8 weeks. You are not required to do anything beyond keeping your application details accurate. Any discrepancy between what you stated in the form and what verification reveals can result in cancellation of your selection, even after joining.

Important: Fill your application with 100% accurate details — full name (as on documents), correct date of birth, correct address, and correct educational institutions. A spelling difference in your name across documents (Class 10 vs degree vs Aadhaar) can cause delays. Get them corrected before applying.

Can You Apply If You Are Already in a Government Job?

Yes — government employees can apply for ITBP AC Engineer. However, you must submit a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from your current employer at the time of document verification. If selected, you will need to formally resign from your current position before joining ITBP. Sending your application through "proper channel" (routing it through your employer) is required in most cases — read the notification carefully for this requirement.

Ex-Servicemen — Special Provisions

Ex-servicemen who served in the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force are eligible for age relaxation beyond the standard 3 years. The calculation is: 3 years + (total years of military service). Age Limit और Relaxation

Common Doubts — जवाब

State university की degree valid है? हाँ, अगर university UGC-recognized है (UGC Act Section 2(f) या 12(B) के तहत)। UGC website पर list check करें।

Distance/Open university से B.Tech? Generally NOT accepted। Full-time regular B.E./B.Tech ही valid है।

EEE (Electrical & Electronics) valid है? Generally yes — Electrical Engineering के equivalent माना जाता है। Official notification में confirm करें।

PST — उस दिन क्या होता है

Admit card और original documents लेकर venue पर जाएँ। Document verification → Height (barefoot) → Weight → Chest measurement (male: 81 cm unexpanded, 86 cm expanded)। अगर measurement short है तो एक chance re-measurement का मिलता है। तीनों में pass हुए तो उसी दिन या अगले दिन PET होती है।

Character Verification — क्या होता है

Provisional selection के बाद IB और state police आपकी background verify करती है। Criminal record, family background, educational credentials, address history — सब check होता है। 4–8 हफ्ते लगते हैं। Application में कोई गलत जानकारी नहीं होनी चाहिए — बाद में discrepancy मिलने पर selection cancel हो सकती है।

ध्यान दें: Class 10, degree, और Aadhaar पर नाम same होना चाहिए। कोई spelling difference है तो अभी correct करवाएँ।

क्या Government Employee Apply कर सकते हैं?

Ex-Servicemen के लिए Special Rules

OBC certificate है लेकिन पिछले साल का है? 1 साल से पुरानी OBC NCL certificate valid नहीं होती। Application से पहले fresh certificate बनवाएँ।

Age exactly 30 है — eligible हूँ? हाँ। Cutoff date 11 May 2026 को आपकी age 30 years 0 months है तो eligible हैं। 31st birthday 11 May 2026 के बाद होनी चाहिए।
