RRB ALP Eligibility 2026 – Age Limit, Educational Qualification, ITI Trades & Medical Standards
The RRB ALP (Assistant Loco Pilot) recruitment under CEN 01/2024 has 18,799 vacancies — making it one of the largest Railway recruitment drives in recent years. But before you fill the application form, you must be certain you actually meet all eligibility conditions. ALP has some of the strictest medical requirements of any Central Government job — specifically around vision — and the educational qualification has nuances that confuse many applicants. Graduates sometimes assume they are not eligible, when in fact they are. ITI holders sometimes pick the wrong trade and find out at Document Verification. This article clears all of that up.
The five eligibility requirements for RRB ALP 2026 are: Nationality, Age, Educational Qualification (Education + ITI/Diploma/12th Route), Medical Standards, and CBAT Qualifying. Each one is a hard gate — fail any one and you cannot be appointed as ALP regardless of your exam score.
1. Nationality
The candidate must be a citizen of India. Alternatively, subjects of Nepal, subjects of Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, and persons of Indian origin who have migrated from specific countries (Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, East African countries, etc.) with the intention of permanently settling in India are also eligible — provided they possess a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.
For the vast majority of applicants, the nationality condition is simply: Indian citizen, as per Aadhaar/passport/voter ID.
2. Age Limit — As on 1 July 2026
The age limit for RRB ALP 2026 is 18 to 28 years for General (UR) category candidates. Age is calculated as on 1 July 2026 (as specified in CEN 01/2024 — verify in official notification as this date is set per CEN). Candidates who have not yet turned 18 by the cutoff date, or who will be older than 28, are not eligible.
| Category | Upper Age Limit | Age Relaxation |
|---|---|---|
| General / UR | 28 years | — |
| OBC (NCL) | 31 years | +3 years |
| SC | 33 years | +5 years |
| ST | 33 years | +5 years |
| PwBD (UR) | 38 years | +10 years |
| PwBD (OBC) | 41 years | +13 years |
| PwBD (SC/ST) | 43 years | +15 years |
| Ex-Servicemen (ExSM) | As per rules | 3 years after deduction of service rendered |
| Widows / Divorced / Judicially Separated (UR) | 35 years | +7 years |
| Widows / Divorced / Judicially Separated (SC/ST) | 40 years | +12 years |
Ex-Servicemen age relaxation works differently: the actual military service period is deducted from the age, and then an additional 3 years of relaxation is added. So an Ex-SM who served 6 years in military and is currently 32 years old: (32 − 6) + 3 = 29 — within the 28-year UR limit with the 3-year relaxation.
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) relaxation requires a valid OBC-NCL certificate in the Central Government format. State government OBC certificates are not accepted for Central Government jobs including Railway recruitment.
3. Educational Qualification — Four Valid Routes
This is where most confusion happens. There are four valid qualification routes for ALP. Any one of these makes you eligible:
Route 1 — 10th Pass + ITI (National Trade Certificate / NTC)
This is the most common route. You must have passed Class 10 (Matriculation) from a recognised board, AND hold a National Trade Certificate (NTC) from the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) or a State Council for Vocational Training (SCVT). The ITI certificate must be in one of the relevant trades listed by the Railway (see trade list below). Both NTC (NCVT) and State-level ITI certificates are accepted, but the trade must appear on the Railway's approved list.
Important: The ITI certificate must be from a recognised government or government-approved private ITI. Certificates from unrecognised institutes are not valid for Railway recruitment purposes.
Route 2 — 10th Pass + Certificate Course from ITI
This specifically refers to the Industrial Training Institute Certificate course (1 or 2 years depending on trade) completed from a recognised ITI. For most practical purposes, this is the same as Route 1 — an NTC from NCVT or SCVT after completing a trade programme at an ITI.
Route 3 — 10th Pass + 3-Year Diploma in Relevant Engineering from Government Polytechnic
A 3-year diploma in a relevant branch of engineering from a Government Polytechnic (or Government-approved polytechnic) is an accepted qualification. The relevant branches are Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and allied branches. A diploma in Computer Science or Civil Engineering may not be in the relevant trades list — verify this in the specific CEN notification before applying.
Note: This diploma must be from a government polytechnic or one approved/affiliated by a state technical education board. Private institute diplomas may or may not be accepted — check the institute's affiliation certificate.
Route 4 — HSC (Class 12th) with Physics and Mathematics (Minimum 50%)
Candidates who have passed Class 12 (HSC) with Physics and Mathematics as subjects, scoring a minimum of 50% aggregate in these two subjects combined (or overall, depending on the notification phrasing — always read the official CEN), are also eligible for ALP. This route was added to widen the eligible pool and recognises that a Class 12 pass with Science stream gives comparable foundational knowledge to an ITI certificate.
Graduates — B.E., B.Tech, B.Sc. holders — are also eligible under this route (since they have passed 12th and their graduation is in relevant engineering). However, no additional preference or marks are given for higher qualifications. A graduate and an ITI holder are evaluated purely on their exam score.
Relevant ITI Trades for ALP — Complete List
The ALP eligibility trades are specified in each CEN notification. Based on CEN 01/2024 and historical CEN notifications, the approved ITI trades for ALP include (but may not be limited to):
| Trade Group | Eligible Trades |
|---|---|
| Electrical | Electrician, Wireman, Armature and Coil Winder, Instrument Mechanic (Electric and Electronic), Mechanic Electrical cum Electronics |
| Electronics | Electronics Mechanic, Mechanic Radio and TV, Mechanic Consumer Electronics, Information Communication Technology System Maintenance |
| Mechanical | Fitter, Machinist, Machinist Grinder, Turner, Millwright Maintenance Engineer, Tool & Die Maker |
| Motor Vehicle / Transport | Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Tractor Mechanic, Mechanic Diesel |
| Refrigeration | Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic, AC Mechanic |
| Metal / Fabrication | Welder (Gas and Electric), Coppersmith, Tin Smith, Sheet Metal Worker, Blacksmith, Foundryman |
| Other | Mechanic Lifting and Shifting Equipment (Crane Mechanic), Pipe Fitter, Plumber (for some specific posts) |
This is not exhaustive — always verify your specific trade against the official CEN 01/2024 notification trade list. Applying with an ineligible trade leads to rejection at Document Verification even if you score highly in the exam.
4. Medical Standards — The Strictest Gate
ALP medical standards are among the strictest for any Central Government post. The reason is simple: a loco pilot operates a train carrying hundreds of passengers at high speed, often for 8–10 hours at a stretch, including night hours. A single lapse in vision, hearing, or alertness can cause a catastrophic accident. The Railway does not compromise on medical standards for safety-critical posts.
Vision Requirements — Most Critical
| Vision Parameter | ALP Standard | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Distant Vision (Unaided) | Better eye: 6/6. Worse eye: 6/9 | WITHOUT spectacles or contact lenses |
| Corrected Vision | Not applicable | No correction (glasses/lenses) allowed for ALP at all |
| Colour Vision | No colour blindness of any type | Both Ishihara test and lantern test must be passed |
| Night Vision | No night blindness | Night blindness test conducted |
| Binocular Vision | Required | Both eyes must function together normally |
| Field of Vision | Normal | No significant field defect allowed |
The unaided vision requirement is absolute — 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye without any correction. This is the requirement that disqualifies the largest number of ALP candidates at the medical stage. If you currently wear spectacles or contact lenses of any power, you should get your unaided vision tested at an eye hospital before applying. A visual acuity of 6/12 in the worse eye (even with glasses giving 6/6) will fail you. There is no waiver, no reconsideration, no appeal on this criterion for ALP.
Hearing
The candidate must have normal hearing — no significant hearing loss in either ear. The audiometric test checks hearing ability at both low and high frequencies. Candidates who use hearing aids are not eligible for ALP.
Vertigo and Neurological Conditions
No history of vertigo, epilepsy, or blackouts. ALP duty involves working in high-speed moving vehicles, sometimes on high bridges and viaducts. Vertigo or neurological conditions that cause loss of consciousness are absolute disqualifiers. Candidates with a known history of epilepsy — even if controlled by medication — are not eligible for ALP.
Chronic Medical Conditions
Candidates with Diabetes Mellitus requiring medication (insulin or oral hypoglycaemic agents), hypertension requiring medication, or any other condition requiring chronic daily medication are generally not selected for ALP. The Railway's medical examination specifically checks blood sugar (fasting and post-prandial) and blood pressure at the time of examination.
Height and Weight
There is no specific height or weight standard for ALP — unlike Police or Para-Military recruitment. However, the candidate must be physically fit and capable of performing operational duties. Candidates who are severely obese (where it affects physical agility) may be assessed by the medical board.
Medical Fitness Class for ALP
ALP is classified under A-1 Medical Fitness Category — the highest fitness standard in Indian Railways. This is the same standard applied to Loco Pilots. A-1 is more demanding than the standards for clerical or supervisory Railway posts. If you are medically fit for A-1 standards, you are eligible for ALP medical clearance.
5. CBAT — Aptitude Test as an Eligibility Gate
The Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) is not exactly an educational eligibility condition, but it functions as a hard gate for ALP appointment. Candidates who clear CBT 1, CBT 2 Part A (merit rank), and CBT 2 Part B Trade Test (qualifying) are called for CBAT. Failing CBAT (scoring below 42/100) means the candidate is not eligible for ALP appointment — they can only be considered for Technician posts based on their other scores.
Think of CBAT as the Railway's way of verifying that the candidate has the cognitive profile required to safely operate a locomotive — spatial awareness, sustained attention, quick judgment, and working memory are all safety-critical for a loco pilot.
Number of Vacancies — CEN 01/2024
| Post | Total Vacancies (CEN 01/2024) | Pay Level |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) | 18,799 | Level 2 (₹19,900) |
| Technician (various categories) | Separate notification | Level 2 (₹19,900) |
The 18,799 ALP vacancies are distributed across all Railway zones and divisions pan-India. The actual number of vacancies in each zone is specified in the detailed notification. Candidates can apply for any zone but may be posted anywhere in India if selected. This is a condition of Railway service that all candidates must accept at the time of application.
Can a Graduate Apply for RRB ALP?
Yes. A graduate (B.E., B.Tech, B.Sc. in relevant fields, or any graduate who has passed 12th with Physics and Mathematics at 50%+) is eligible for ALP. The qualification required is a minimum of 10th + ITI (or equivalent) — a higher qualification does not disqualify you. However, there is no extra preference, no additional marks, and no separate merit list for graduates. A B.Tech holder and an ITI holder are evaluated purely on their CBT scores.
Many graduates apply for ALP because of the Running Allowance — the total monthly salary as ALP (₹60,000–₹70,000 gross) is often higher than entry-level engineering jobs in private sector. Graduates who join ALP and qualify as LP (Goods) and LP (Mail/Express) through departmental exams can reach ₹80,000–₹95,000 per month in-hand within 8–10 years — comparable to mid-level private sector salaries.
Common Eligibility Mistakes to Avoid
- Wrong ITI Trade: Apply only if your trade appears on the Railway's approved trade list for ALP in CEN 01/2024. Do not assume your trade is included — verify it explicitly.
- State OBC vs Central OBC: Only Central Government-format OBC-NCL certificates are valid. State OBC certificates issued for state government jobs are not accepted.
- Vision Test Before Applying: Get your unaided vision tested at a qualified eye hospital before you invest time in ALP preparation. If your unaided vision is 6/12 or worse in either eye, you will fail the ALP medical even if your score is excellent.
- Age Calculation Date: Confirm the age cutoff date in the official notification — typically 1 July of the recruitment year, but always verify.
- 12th Route Percentage: If applying via the 12th pass route, ensure you have minimum 50% in Physics and Mathematics. Check whether this is 50% in each subject or 50% aggregate of the two — read the notification carefully.
- Medical History Disclosure: Do not conceal medical history (epilepsy, diabetes, colour blindness) during the application process. Concealment discovered at any stage leads to immediate disqualification and may result in debarment from future Railway recruitment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I apply for RRB ALP 2026 if I have a Diploma in Computer Science Engineering?
This depends on whether Computer Science Engineering diploma is in the approved trade list for ALP in CEN 01/2024. Historically, it has not been included — ALP relevant engineering branches are Electrical, Electronics, and Mechanical (and close variants). Check the official CEN 01/2024 notification's trade list precisely. If Computer Science Engineering diploma is not listed, you are not eligible under the diploma route, but you may still be eligible if you also have a 10th pass + ITI certificate in a relevant electrical/electronics trade.
Q: I wear contact lenses and my corrected vision is 6/6 in both eyes. Am I eligible for ALP?
No. ALP medical requires unaided (uncorrected) vision of 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye. Contact lenses correct your vision, but the Railway tests vision without any correction. If your unaided vision is below the required standard, you will fail the medical for ALP — regardless of your corrected vision. The Railway does not make exceptions to this standard for ALP because clear unaided vision is a safety-critical requirement for loco operation.
Q: Is LASIK eye surgery a solution for ALP vision eligibility?
This is a nuanced area. The Railway's position on LASIK has evolved — in some recent notifications and Railway Board circulars, candidates who have undergone LASIK surgery and whose post-operative unaided vision meets the 6/6 and 6/9 standard may be considered. However, you must have a stable post-operative period (typically 1 year of stable vision post-surgery) and the medical board's final decision applies. Do not rely on LASIK as a guaranteed path — verify the current Railway policy in the CEN 01/2024 notification and with the official Railway Medical Department before investing in surgery.
Q: Is there any physical fitness test (PFT) for RRB ALP 2026?
No — there is no separate Physical Fitness Test (running, weight lifting, etc.) for RRB ALP unlike Railway Protection Force (RPF) or Police recruitment. However, the medical examination is comprehensive and tests overall physical fitness including cardiovascular health, blood pressure, blood sugar, vision, hearing, and neurological function. A candidate who passes all the medical tests is considered physically fit for ALP duty.
Q: Can a Class 10 dropout who later got an ITI certificate apply for ALP?
No. The educational qualification requires passing Class 10 (Matriculation) from a recognised board — this is a mandatory prerequisite for all ALP routes. An ITI certificate alone (without Class 10 pass) is not sufficient. You must have both: (1) Class 10 pass certificate from a recognised board, AND (2) ITI NTC in a relevant trade. Candidates who appeared for Class 10 equivalency exams (like NIOS) with subsequent recognition from the Board of Education may be eligible — verify with the Railway's official notification.
