SAIL Management Trainee Eligibility 2026 – Qualification, Age Limit, Bond & Application
SAIL MT eligibility is broader than most people assume. The common image of SAIL MT is engineering graduates — but SAIL also recruits MTs in Finance (CA/MBA), HR (MBA/MSW), and Marketing (MBA). Each stream has different qualifications. Understanding exactly which stream you qualify for, and whether your institution is recognised, saves you from a rejection at document verification after clearing the exam.

Educational Qualification — Stream-wise
| Stream | Required Qualification | Minimum Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering (all technical disciplines) | BE/B.Tech in relevant branch from AICTE-recognised institute | 60% aggregate (50% for SC/ST/PwD) |
| Finance | CA (ICAI) / ICWA (CMA) / MBA Finance from recognised university | 60% for MBA (CA/CMA: pass) |
| HR / Personnel | MBA/PGDM in HR or IR / MSW from recognised university | 60% aggregate |
| Marketing | MBA/PGDM (any specialization) from recognised university | 60% aggregate |
The 60% criterion applies to the final degree — not any single semester. If your university uses CGPA, check SAIL's notification for the conversion formula. SAIL typically applies the university's own published formula, or multiplies CGPA by 10 if no formula exists (note: this differs from UGC's recommended 9.5 multiplier). Candidates in their final year of qualifying degree can also apply provisionally.
Age Limit
| Category | Maximum Age |
|---|---|
| General / EWS | 28 years |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 31 years |
| SC / ST | 33 years |
| PwD (General) | 38 years |
| PwD (OBC) | 41 years |
| PwD (SC/ST) | 43 years |
Age is calculated as of the application closing date. The 28-year UR limit is more relaxed than GAIL (26) and similar to NTPC and PGCIL (both 27–28 depending on batch). If you're 27 or 28 and missed GATE, SAIL MT is one of the few quality central PSU options still available to you.
Technical Disciplines Covered
SAIL recruits MTs in: Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Metallurgy, Mining, Chemical, Electronics & Telecommunication, Computer Science/IT, Instrumentation. Not all disciplines are recruited in every batch — the official notification lists which disciplines have vacancies that cycle. Metallurgy is a discipline almost exclusive to steel and mining PSUs, which makes SAIL one of the few top-tier employers for metallurgy graduates.
Service Bond
SAIL MTs sign a service bond of ₹2,00,000 (₹2 lakh) for a period of 2 years from the date of joining. If you resign before completing 2 years, the bond amount is recovered. This is slightly higher than GAIL's bond (₹1 lakh) but lower than some other PSUs that impose 3-year bonds. The bond is a one-time liability — after 2 years, you are free to leave without any financial penalty.
Application Process
SAIL MT applications are submitted online through the official SAIL careers portal (sail.co.in/careers). The process typically involves: filling the online form with personal, educational, and discipline details; uploading documents (photo, signature, certificates); paying the application fee; and printing/saving the confirmation slip.
Application fee: General/OBC/EWS: ₹500 (approximately, varies by batch); SC/ST/PwD/Ex-SM: No fee. Fee is paid online via net banking, debit/credit card, or UPI. No offline mode.
Stream-wise Eligibility — Not Just for Engineers
Most candidates assume SAIL MT is an engineering-only exam. It is not. SAIL MT 2026 has four functional streams, each with different eligibility criteria:
| Stream | Required Qualification | Minimum Marks | Discipline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical (Engineering) | BE / B.Tech / B.Sc. Engg. | 60% (UR/EWS/OBC) | 50% (SC/ST/PwD) | Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Metallurgy, Instrumentation, Chemical |
| Finance | CA (ICAI) / MBA (Finance) / M.Com | CA: Pass marks | MBA/M.Com: 60% | Chartered Accountancy or Finance specialisation |
| Human Resource (HR) | MBA (HR/Personnel) / MSW / MA (HRD/PM&IR) | 60% (UR/EWS/OBC) | 50% (SC/ST/PwD) | HR, Personnel Management, Industrial Relations, Social Work |
| Marketing | MBA (Marketing) | 60% (UR/EWS/OBC) | 50% (SC/ST/PwD) | Marketing specialisation from AICTE-approved institute |
For Finance MTs who are CAs: ICAI membership is the primary qualifier — the degree percentage rule does not apply. For MBA Finance candidates: the 60% rule applies to your MBA degree (final result, not just one semester). Part-time MBA is generally not accepted for central PSU positions — the MBA must be full-time.
CGPA Conversion — The Formula You Need
Many universities issue CGPA instead of percentage. SAIL's eligibility clause says "60% aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA." The official conversion formula used for central government purposes is:
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
So 60% threshold means CGPA of 6.32 or higher. If your university uses a 10-point scale, a CGPA of 6.5 converts to 61.75% — eligible. A CGPA of 6.2 converts to 58.9% — not eligible for UR/OBC/EWS, but may be eligible for SC/ST/PwD (50% threshold = CGPA 5.26+).
Important: If your university explicitly states a different conversion methodology on the marksheet or official website, SAIL may accept that conversion instead. Always check the notification's eligibility clause carefully — and if in doubt, get a percentage certificate from your university registrar.
Age Eligibility — Full Relaxation Table
| Category | Upper Age Limit | Relaxation |
|---|---|---|
| UR (General / EWS) | 28 years | — |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 31 years | +3 years |
| SC / ST | 33 years | +5 years |
| PwD (General / EWS) | 38 years | +10 years |
| PwD (OBC) | 41 years | +13 years |
| PwD (SC / ST) | 43 years | +15 years |
| Ex-Servicemen (UR) | 31 years (or service + 3 years) | Varies by service length |
| Ex-Servicemen (OBC) | 34 years | Service + 6 years |
| Ex-Servicemen (SC/ST) | 36 years | Service + 8 years |
Age is calculated as of the application closing date, not the exam date. If the notification says "age as on 01-May-2026," your birthday must be on or after 02-May-1998 (for UR) to be eligible.
Service Bond — What Happens If You Break It
SAIL requires all MTs to sign a service bond of ₹2 lakh for a minimum 2-year service period starting from the date of joining (not from confirmation). This bond is documented at the time of offer letter acceptance, not just at joining.
If you leave SAIL before completing 2 years of service, you must pay ₹2 lakh as per the bond conditions. In practice, SAIL does enforce this — deducting it from the final settlement (gratuity, PF withdrawal, salary dues). Some departments require a surety — a government employee co-signing the bond — though this is increasingly being waived in recent batches.
After the 2-year bond period, there is no restriction on leaving. You can resign and move to a private company, another PSU, or a government position without any penalty.
PwD (Persons with Disabilities) — Which Disabilities Apply
SAIL MT vacancies include horizontal reservations for PwD candidates. Applicable disability categories and which posts they are eligible for:
| Disability Category | Eligible Streams | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Locomotor Disability (OA, OL, OAL) | All streams | Minimum 40% disability; must be able to perform assigned functions |
| Visually Impaired (LV, B) | HR, Finance, Marketing only | Blind (B) and Low Vision (LV) — generally not eligible for plant/technical roles |
| Hearing Impaired (HH) | All streams subject to post requirements | HH candidates in technical roles face restrictions at specific plant areas |
| Colour Blindness | Not applicable for EE/EC streams | Colour blindness disqualifies from technical EE roles due to wiring/panel work safety norms |
Documents Needed for Document Verification (DV)
If you clear the CBT and the written exam, SAIL calls you for Document Verification (DV) and Medical Examination before issuing the offer letter. Keep these documents ready — all originals plus two photocopies:
| Document | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Class 10 marksheet + certificate | Date of birth proof (only CBSE/state board marksheet accepted — Aadhaar alone is not sufficient) |
| Class 12 marksheet + certificate | Education continuity |
| All B.Tech/BE semester marksheets | Aggregate percentage/CGPA verification |
| Degree certificate or provisional certificate | Proof of degree awarded |
| Category certificate (OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS) | Must be in central government format, issued after April 2023 for OBC-NCL (recent financial year) |
| PwD certificate (if applicable) | Issued by competent authority (civil surgeon / medical board) |
| Aadhaar card | Identity verification |
| Recent passport-size photographs (6–8 copies) | Multiple forms and identity registers |
| Admit card / Hall ticket | Must carry original |
OBC-NCL candidates: your certificate must state "Non-Creamy Layer" explicitly and be from the current or immediately preceding financial year. An OBC certificate from 3–4 years ago is typically not accepted for central PSU positions. Get a fresh one before your DV call date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I apply for SAIL MT if I have a degree from a distance learning university?
No. SAIL requires a full-time regular BE/B.Tech from an AICTE-recognised institute for engineering disciplines. Distance or correspondence degrees are not accepted for technical streams. For MBA (HR/Marketing/Finance), full-time programmes from UGC-recognised universities are accepted — check the notification for distance MBA acceptance, as policy varies.
Q: I have 58% in my B.Tech. Am I eligible for SAIL MT?
No — for General/OBC/EWS candidates, the minimum is 60%. SC/ST/PwD candidates need 50%. There is no rounding up: 59.9% does not qualify as 60%. Check your university's exact calculation method before applying.
Q: Can a CA who also has an engineering degree apply in the Finance stream?
Yes. A CA who has passed the ICAI final exam can apply in the Finance stream regardless of their undergraduate degree. The CA qualification itself is sufficient for Finance MT — no additional MBA is required.
Q: What happens if SAIL discovers a discrepancy at document verification?
Discrepancies in marks, branch name, or degree validity at DV result in immediate disqualification — even after clearing the CBT and GD/PI. If your mark sheet shows different branch names across semesters (common in universities that changed course titles), bring a certificate from your university clarifying the equivalence. Don't assume SAIL will figure it out — proactively address anything unusual.
Q: Is there a fee for the Group Discussion and Personal Interview stage?
No additional fee for GD/PI. SAIL typically reimburses AC/sleeper rail fare (or equivalent) to outstation candidates called for GD/PI, subject to producing journey tickets.
