SSC CHSL Eligibility 2026: Complete Guide to Age, Qualification, Attempts and Typing Rules
SSC CHSL is one of the most misunderstood exams in the government job space. The basic requirement — 12th pass, age 18–27 — sounds simple, but nearly every second applicant gets confused about something. Can graduates apply? Is there a minimum percentage? What about a gap year between 12th and the application? Is typing tested on day one? Does the DEO post need Maths and Science? This guide answers every one of those questions with specifics, so you can fill the form with full confidence.
SSC CHSL 2026 (Combined Higher Secondary Level) recruits for Lower Division Clerk, Junior Secretariat Assistant, Postal Assistant, Sorting Assistant, Data Entry Operator, and DEO Grade A at CAG — all requiring only a 12th pass. The selection is entirely through a Computer Based Test (CBT) followed by a Skill Test or Typing Test for shortlisted candidates. There is no interview.

Educational Qualification for SSC CHSL 2026
The minimum educational requirement for all SSC CHSL posts is 10+2 (Class 12 / Intermediate / Higher Secondary) from a recognised Board. That is the single academic bar — and it applies equally to every post under CHSL.
There is no minimum percentage requirement. A student who passed 12th with 35% marks and a student who passed with 95% marks are treated identically. What matters is the pass certificate — not your score.
Accepted Streams
All streams are accepted without any preference at the eligibility stage:
- Science (PCM, PCB, or other combinations)
- Commerce
- Arts / Humanities
- Vocational subjects
- Any other stream recognised by a state or central board
The only partial exception is the DEO post at the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG). For that specific posting, a 12th pass with Science and Mathematics is preferred at the Document Verification stage — but it is not mandatory. A student from Commerce or Arts who qualifies the CBT can still be considered; the Science + Maths preference only matters when two candidates are otherwise equally ranked. Do not treat this as a disqualifying condition.
What "Recognised Board" Means
Your 12th pass certificate must be from a board that is recognised by the central or state government — CBSE, ICSE, and all state boards qualify. Open school boards like the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are recognised by the Ministry of Education and are therefore valid for SSC CHSL. If you passed your 12th from NIOS, you are eligible.
Boards that are not listed with the Association of Indian Universities or not approved by COBSE (Council of Boards of School Education) may face scrutiny at document verification. If your board is unusual or state-specific, verify its recognition status before applying.
Can Graduates Apply for SSC CHSL 2026?
Yes — graduates can and do apply for SSC CHSL. The exam is open to all candidates who meet the 12th pass and age criteria, regardless of whether they have gone on to complete graduation or post-graduation. Many graduates apply for CHSL to secure a Central Government job quickly while preparing for higher-level exams like SSC CGL.
However, graduating does not give you any additional advantage in CHSL. You will be placed in the same selection list as candidates who are 12th pass only. The CHSL cadre is a 12th-pass cadre — your degree does not earn you a higher pay level or faster promotion within CHSL. If you are already a graduate, also check SSC CGL eligibility — it offers higher-level posts (Group B and C) for which CHSL posts can feel limiting in the long run.
Vocational Qualification and Diploma Students
Students who pursued ITI or vocational courses alongside 12th are eligible — as long as they have passed 12th (Higher Secondary) from a recognised Board. A standalone ITI certificate or diploma (without a 12th pass board certificate) is NOT accepted for SSC CHSL. The 12th board pass certificate is the mandatory document. If you completed a three-year diploma directly after 10th without a 12th board examination, you are not eligible for CHSL.
SSC CHSL Age Limit 2026
The expected age cut-off date for SSC CHSL 2026 is 1 August 2026 — SSC has used 1 August as the age reference date consistently in recent CHSL cycles. The official notification will confirm this. All six posts in CHSL share the same age band:
| Post | Minimum Age | Maximum Age |
|---|---|---|
| Lower Division Clerk (LDC) | 18 years | 27 years |
| Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) | 18 years | 27 years |
| Postal Assistant (PA) | 18 years | 27 years |
| Sorting Assistant (SA) | 18 years | 27 years |
| Data Entry Operator (DEO) | 18 years | 27 years |
| DEO Grade A (CAG) | 18 years | 27 years |
The 18–27 band is stricter than SSC CGL, which allows candidates up to age 30 or even 32 for certain posts. CHSL is designed for fresh 12th-pass candidates — the tighter age band reflects that. Age is calculated as of the cut-off date, not the application date or exam date.
SSC CHSL Age Relaxation 2026
Reserved category candidates and special groups receive age relaxation beyond the 27-year General category upper limit:
| Category | Relaxation | Effective Upper Age |
|---|---|---|
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years | 30 years |
| SC / ST | 5 years | 32 years |
| PwD — General | 10 years | 37 years |
| PwD — OBC | 13 years | 40 years |
| PwD — SC / ST | 15 years | 42 years |
| Ex-Servicemen — General | 3 years (after deducting period of military service) | 30 years (effective) |
| Ex-Servicemen — OBC | 6 years | 33 years (effective) |
| Ex-Servicemen — SC / ST | 8 years | 35 years (effective) |
PwD certificate note: The disability certificate must be issued by a Competent Medical Authority — specifically a Government hospital at the CMO (Chief Medical Officer) level or above. A certificate from a private hospital or a lower-level government facility is not accepted. Get this certificate in place before the application window opens, as the process can take a few weeks at busy government hospitals.
Number of Attempts in SSC CHSL
There is no official attempt limit for SSC CHSL. You can appear every year as long as you meet the age eligibility criteria at the time of application. The effective number of attempts is determined entirely by how many years of the 18–27 age window you have left:
- General / EWS: Up to approximately 9 attempts (age 18 to 27)
- OBC (NCL): Up to approximately 12 attempts (age 18 to 30)
- SC / ST: Up to approximately 14 attempts (age 18 to 32)
- PwD (General): Up to approximately 19 attempts (age 18 to 37)
If you appeared for CHSL in a previous year and did not clear it, that attempt does not count against you in any way. Each attempt is independent, and SSC does not track your history of appearances for eligibility purposes.
