Paper 1 Eligibility — Primary Level (Class 1-5 Teachers)

Want to teach little kids? Here's what you need. You must have any one of these qualification combinations:

Option 1: 12th + D.El.Ed / BTC (Most Common Route)

  • Senior Secondary (12th) with at least 50% marks
  • 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) — passed or appearing in final year
  • This is the most popular route. BTC (now called D.El.Ed) is what most UP candidates do.

Option 2: 12th + D.El.Ed with NCTE Relaxation

  • Senior Secondary (12th) with at least 45% marks
  • 2-year D.El.Ed as per NCTE 2002 Regulations
  • The 45% relaxation applies under specific NCTE norms — check your admission year.

Option 3: Graduation + B.Ed

  • Bachelor's Degree (any subject) with at least 50% marks
  • B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) — passed or appearing in final year
  • If you have B.Ed but scored only 45% in graduation, you're still eligible under NCTE norms.

Option 4: 12th + 4-Year B.El.Ed

  • Senior Secondary (12th) with at least 50% marks
  • 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) from a recognized institution

Option 5: Graduation + D.Ed (Special Education)

  • Graduation (any subject)
  • 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education) recognized by RCI (Rehabilitation Council of India)

Paper 2 Eligibility — Junior Level (Class 6-8 Teachers)

Teaching older students requires a higher qualification. You need graduation + a professional teaching degree. Here are your options:

Option 1: Graduation + B.Ed (Most Common)

  • Bachelor's Degree with at least 50% marks
  • B.Ed (1-year or 2-year) — passed or appearing in final year
  • This is the standard route for most Paper 2 candidates.

Option 2: Graduation + B.Ed (NCTE Relaxation)

  • Bachelor's Degree with at least 45% marks
  • B.Ed as per NCTE Recognition Norms
  • The 45% relaxation is available for specific NCTE-recognized B.Ed programs.

Option 3: Post-Graduation + B.Ed

  • Master's Degree (any subject) with at least 50% marks
  • B.Ed — passed or appearing

Option 4: Graduation/PG + 2-Year BTC

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree
  • 2-year BTC (Basic Training Certificate) — recognized by UP government

Important: Age is calculated as on 1st July 2026. So if you turn 36 on 2nd July 2026, you're still eligible under General category. And the OBC/SC/ST relaxation is only for UP domicile candidates — not for other states.

Can You Give Both Papers?

Yes! If you meet the eligibility for both Paper 1 and Paper 2, you can appear for both in the same exam cycle. Paper 1 is held in the morning shift and Paper 2 in the evening shift — so there's no timing conflict.

Why should you? Simple — more options. With both papers cleared, you can apply for primary teacher posts AND junior teacher posts. Given how competitive these exams are, why limit yourself?

What About Final Year Students?

This is where it gets confusing for many. Here's the clear answer:

  • Yes, final year students CAN appear for UPTET. If you're in the last year of D.El.Ed, B.Ed, BTC, B.El.Ed, or B.A.Ed — you are eligible.
  • But — your UPTET certificate will only be valid after you pass your professional course.
  • If you fail your D.El.Ed / B.Ed after clearing UPTET, your UPTET certificate becomes invalid.
  • So appear for UPTET, but make sure you clear your teaching degree too.

Number of Attempts

Here's some good news — there's no limit on the number of attempts for UPTET. As long as you meet the age criteria, you can appear as many times as you want. Failed last time? Try again. Want to improve your score? Try again. No restrictions.

Common Doubts — Cleared

I have a B.Ed from distance/correspondence mode. Am I eligible?
Only if your B.Ed program is recognized by NCTE and the distance education university is recognized by UGC/DEB. Many distance B.Ed degrees from unrecognized institutes have been rejected. Verify your college's NCTE recognition before applying.

I'm from another state. Can I give UPTET?
Yes, anyone with Indian nationality can appear for UPTET regardless of domicile. However, age relaxation for OBC/SC/ST is only for UP domicile candidates. Also, the UPTET certificate is valid only for teaching jobs in Uttar Pradesh.

My graduation marks are 49.5% — does it round to 50%?
It depends on your university. If your university rounds off to 50%, then yes. If your marksheet says 49.5%, it will not be considered as 50% by UPTET authorities. Check your consolidated marksheet carefully.

I have B.A + B.Ed. Can I teach Science/Maths in Paper 2?
UPTET doesn't restrict subjects — you can appear for Paper 2 with any graduation subject. However, for the actual teacher recruitment (Super TET/UPPSC), subject matching matters. So check the recruitment rules separately.

Is computer certificate (CCC/BCC) required for UPTET?
Not for UPTET itself. But for many UP teacher recruitment exams (like Super TET), CCC or equivalent computer certificate is required. Get it done while preparing — it's easy and takes 3 months.

I cleared UPTET before but didn't get a job. Do I need to clear it again?
The UPTET certificate is now valid for lifetime (as per Supreme Court order). If you cleared it earlier, it's still valid. However, many candidates appear again to improve their score since a higher UPTET percentage can help in recruitment merit lists.

What documents are needed during UPTET application?
Photo, Signature, 10th marksheet (for date of birth), 12th marksheet, Graduation marksheet, D.El.Ed/B.Ed certificate or appearing proof, Category certificate (if applicable), Aadhaar card or ID proof.

UPTET Age Limit — Category Wise Details

UPTET Age Limit for General Category

Minimum: 18 years | Maximum: 35 years (as on 01 July 2026). No relaxation for General category.

UPTET Age Limit for OBC

Minimum: 18 years | Maximum: 40 years (+5 years relaxation). Only for UP domicile OBC candidates.

UPTET Age Limit for SC/ST

Minimum: 18 years | Maximum: 40 years (+5 years relaxation). UP domicile SC/ST candidates only.

UPTET Age Limit for Female Candidates

There is no separate female age relaxation in UPTET. Female candidates follow their category age limit — General female: 35 years, OBC female: 40 years, SC/ST female: 40 years, PwD female: 50 years.

UPTET Age Limit for PwD (Divyang)

Maximum: 50 years (+15 years relaxation). Applicable to all categories.

Paper 2 Eligibility — जूनियर स्तर (कक्षा 6-8)

बड़े बच्चों को पढ़ाने के लिए higher qualification चाहिए — Graduation + professional teaching degree।

क्या दोनों Papers दे सकते हैं?

Distance/correspondence से B.Ed किया है। Eligible हूँ?
तभी जब आपका B.Ed program NCTE recognized हो और university UGC/DEB approved हो। कई unrecognized distance B.Ed degrees reject होती हैं। Apply करने से पहले अपने college का NCTE recognition verify कर लीजिए।

दूसरे state से हूँ। UPTET दे सकता/सकती हूँ?
