UGC NET is the national-level eligibility test that determines whether you can be a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in a university or an Assistant Professor at any central or state university and college in India. NTA conducts it twice a year — June and December. The June 2026 cycle opened on 29 April and closes 20 May. If you have a postgraduate degree and you're looking to enter academia or fund your PhD through a fellowship, this is the most important exam on your calendar right now.
Qualifying UGC NET does not mean you have a job — it means you are eligible to apply for Assistant Professor posts anywhere in India, and if you get JRF, you get a monthly research fellowship of ₹37,000/month for the first two years and ₹42,000/month for up to three more years while you pursue your PhD. That's real money to do full-time research, not a nominal scholarship.

Why UGC NET Qualification Matters Beyond Fellowship
Most state government universities and central universities now require UGC NET as a minimum eligibility for Assistant Professor recruitment. Without a NET certificate, you cannot even apply — regardless of how strong your academic record is. State-level education service commission recruitments (like UPHESC, MPPSC, RPSC) also mandate NET/SET as eligibility. Clearing NET in June 2026 means your certificate is ready when state recruitment cycles open in late 2026 and early 2027. It's worth doing now rather than waiting for the December cycle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I'm in the final year of my Master's — can I apply?
Yes. You can appear provisionally. However, you must obtain the minimum 55% marks in your Master's before the joining date if you eventually get an Assistant Professor post. If you're appearing for JRF and get selected, the offer is conditional on final year marks.
Q: Is there a limit on how many times I can appear for UGC NET?
No — there is no attempt limit for UGC NET. You can appear every session until you qualify. For JRF, the age limit is the constraint. For NET (Assistant Professor), neither age nor attempt count is restricted.
Q: If I qualify for JRF, do I have to do a PhD?
No. JRF gives you the fellowship to pursue PhD research, but you are not forced to enrol. Many candidates use the JRF status to apply for Assistant Professor posts without taking up the fellowship. However, the fellowship itself requires you to enrol in a recognised PhD programme within 2 years of the award letter.
Q: What is the correction window for?
The correction window (22–24 May 2026) lets you fix non-critical errors in the application — subject change, personal details corrections, exam city preference. You cannot change certain locked fields like name or category. Use this window if you spot a mistake after submission.
Q: Is the exam conducted in multiple shifts? Which shift matters?
UGC NET runs across 22–30 June in multiple shifts and cities. Different candidates get different exam dates/shifts — this does not disadvantage you because NTA uses normalisation for scoring across shifts. Your score is reported on a normalised scale, not raw marks.
