Forest Guard vs Wildlife Guard — The 647 vs 61 Posts Distinction That Matters

UPSSSC has released 708 posts split between two distinct roles. Forest Guard (Van Rakshak) accounts for 647 posts and Wildlife Guard (Vanya Jeev Rakshak) accounts for 61 posts. The difference is not just the name — the work is genuinely different and the posting locations are different. Forest Guards are deployed across the general forest ranges of UP Forest Department, which covers the vast stretches of forest land in districts like Kheri, Bahraich, Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Chitrakoot, Pilibhit, and the Terai belt. The work involves protecting government forest land from illegal logging, unauthorized encroachment, and forest fires; assisting in plantation drives; and patrolling assigned forest beats. Wildlife Guards are posted specifically in UP's wildlife sanctuaries and national parks — Dudhwa, Kishanpur, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, Katarniaghat, Chandra Prabha — and their focus is wildlife conservation and anti-poaching operations. Both roles are field-intensive, outdoors-heavy positions. If you have applied for a reason other than genuinely wanting to work in forests or wildlife areas, think carefully before committing to this career.

The PET-2025 Requirement — Why It Is Non-Negotiable

Unlike many state government recruitments that have their own written test for eligibility screening, UPSSSC uses its centralized Preliminary Eligibility Test (PET) as the gateway for all subordinate service posts. For this 2026 Forest Guard recruitment, you must have a valid UPSSSC PET-2025 scorecard. Candidates who did not appear in PET-2025 or whose PET-2025 result was "failed" cannot apply, regardless of their educational qualification. The PET-2025 score does not add to your Forest Guard selection merit — it is just a mandatory qualifying gate. Your actual selection merit will be based on the Forest Guard written examination and subsequent physical tests. Applications open only on 30 June 2026, giving candidates time to confirm their PET-2025 status before the window opens.

The Written Exam — 100 Questions in 120 Minutes

The Forest Guard written examination consists of 100 objective questions to be answered in 120 minutes — twice the time per question compared to banking exams. The syllabus covers General Hindi, General Knowledge (UP-specific and national), Elementary Maths, Elementary Science, and Environment and Forest-related general awareness. The Forest and Environment section is specific to this recruitment and covers topics like forest types in India, wildlife conservation laws (Wildlife Protection Act, Forest Conservation Act), national parks and sanctuaries, environmental pollution and its effects, and basic ecology. Most other sections align with standard UP state government exam patterns. The question paper is in Hindi medium. There is no negative marking in the written exam.

Physical Standards Test and Physical Efficiency Test — Two Separate Stages

Candidates who qualify the written exam proceed to the Physical Standards Test (PST) first, which is a measurement-based check where officers verify your height and other physical parameters against the official notification standards. Only candidates who clear PST appear for the Physical Efficiency Test (PET), which involves running and other physical fitness tasks. Both stages are mandatory and conducted sequentially — failing PST means you do not get to attempt PET. Physical preparation should begin immediately: the time between now and the written exam, and from the written exam to PET, is limited. Daily running is non-negotiable. The Forest Guard role is a field position and the physical requirements reflect what the job actually demands — a Forest Guard who cannot run, climb, and sustain physical activity in forest terrain for extended periods cannot do the job.

What Does a Forest Guard in UP Actually Do?

A Forest Guard's jurisdiction is a "beat" — a defined area of forest land assigned to them for regular patrolling. In UP's Terai forests (Kheri, Bahraich, Pilibhit), beats often border Nepal and cover dense sal and mixed forests. In Sonbhadra and Mirzapur, beats cover teak and bamboo forests with tribal habitation. The Forest Guard's day involves morning beat patrol on foot or by bicycle, checking for signs of illegal logging, setting fire lines during the dry season to prevent forest fires, monitoring plantation sites, and maintaining records of forest produce. During any illegal activity or encroachment, the Forest Guard files reports and assists the Range Officer in legal action. A Wildlife Guard in Dudhwa or Kishanpur does similar patrolling but with a wildlife focus — recording wildlife sightings, monitoring camera traps, and supporting anti-poaching teams. It is a physically demanding and genuinely outdoor role — the UP Forest Department's posting areas are among the country's best remaining forest cover.

Salary and Career Path

The Forest Guard post carries Pay Level-2: ₹19,900 per month basic pay. With Dearness Allowance at current rates, the total gross comes to approximately ₹28,000–30,000 per month before deductions. Forest department postings in remote areas come with government accommodation and some additional allowances. Career progression from Forest Guard goes through Forest Guard Head → Forest Ranger (through departmental exam) → Sub-Divisional Forest Officer. The UP Forest Department has an active internal promotion system, and Forest Guards with good service records are regularly promoted to Head Forest Guard positions and beyond. For candidates who genuinely want to work in forests and wildlife, this career offers meaningful work, outdoor life, government job security, pension, and the satisfaction of actually protecting something that matters.
