Why Government Portals Require JPEG, Not PNG

All major government portals — SSC, IBPS, UPSC, Railway — explicitly state JPEG/JPG format in their photo upload guidelines.

1Why do government portals not accept PNG images?
Government job application portals (SSC, IBPS, UPSC, Railway) are built to accept only JPEG (JPG) images for photos and signatures. PNG files are often larger and contain transparency (alpha channel) which is not suitable for form uploads. All official guidelines specify JPEG format. Converting PNG to JPG is a mandatory step before uploading to any government portal.
2Will quality be lost when converting PNG to JPG?
JPEG uses lossy compression, which means some information is discarded — but at quality 90% and above, the difference is invisible to the human eye for passport-size photos. Our default quality is 92%, which provides excellent visual quality with significantly smaller file size. Transparent backgrounds in PNG are filled with white before converting, which is required for government ID photos.
3What happens to transparent PNG backgrounds when converted to JPG?
JPEG does not support transparency. When you convert a PNG with a transparent background to JPG, our tool automatically fills the transparent areas with white before converting. This is actually the correct behavior for government ID photos, which require a plain white or light background.
4What quality should I set for government form photos?
The default quality of 92% is recommended for most purposes. This produces a file that looks identical to the original while being significantly smaller.
