📋

Why Government Portals Require JPEG, Not PNG

📋

Official Requirement

All major government portals — SSC, IBPS, UPSC, Railway — explicitly state JPEG/JPG format in their photo upload guidelines.

📦

Smaller File Size

JPEG photos are typically 5–10x smaller than PNG for the same dimensions, making them easier to upload within the portal's KB limits.

🔲

No Transparency

JPEG does not support transparent backgrounds. Transparent PNG areas become white — exactly what government ID photos require.

📖

How to Convert PNG to JPG

Frequently Asked Questions

1Why do government portals not accept PNG images?

Government job application portals (SSC, IBPS, UPSC, Railway) are built to accept only JPEG (JPG) images for photos and signatures. PNG files are often larger and contain transparency (alpha channel) which is not suitable for form uploads. All official guidelines specify JPEG format. Converting PNG to JPG is a mandatory step before uploading to any government portal.

2Will quality be lost when converting PNG to JPG?

JPEG uses lossy compression, which means some information is discarded — but at quality 90% and above, the difference is invisible to the human eye for passport-size photos. Our default quality is 92%, which provides excellent visual quality with significantly smaller file size. Transparent backgrounds in PNG are filled with white before converting, which is required for government ID photos.

3What happens to transparent PNG backgrounds when converted to JPG?

JPEG does not support transparency. When you convert a PNG with a transparent background to JPG, our tool automatically fills the transparent areas with white before converting. This is actually the correct behavior for government ID photos, which require a plain white or light background.

4What quality should I set for government form photos?

The default quality of 92% is recommended for most purposes. This produces a file that looks identical to the original while being significantly smaller. If you need to hit a specific KB range (e.g., 20–50 KB), use our Photo Resizer tool which has binary-search compression to hit exact KB targets. For photos where pure quality matters (UPSC, which allows up to 300 KB), use 95%+.

5Can I convert multiple PNG files at once?

Yes, our tool supports up to 5 PNG files at once. Upload all your files together, adjust the quality slider, then click Convert to process all of them simultaneously. Each file shows a before/after preview and its own download button. This is useful when you have separate photo and signature files in PNG format.

6How do I reduce the file size of my converted JPG to meet portal requirements?

After converting to JPG, if the file size is still too large for a portal (e.g., must be under 50 KB), use the Photo Resizer tool with your target portal preset. The resizer uses binary-search compression to hit the exact KB range. Alternatively, lower the quality slider on this converter (try 80–85%) to reduce file size further.
