Frequently Asked Questions

1Why does UPSC require name and date on the photo?

UPSC Civil Services Examination requires candidates to upload a photograph with their name and date of photograph printed at the bottom. This is a security and verification measure to ensure the photo belongs to the correct candidate and was taken recently. The text must be legible and appear at the bottom of the photo, typically against a white strip. This requirement is clearly stated in the UPSC CSE official notification every year.

2What exact format should the text be in for UPSC?

UPSC does not specify an exact font size or pixel format for the text, but the standard practice is: (1) Print your full name as it appears in your application form — in capital letters. (2) Print the date in DD/MM/YYYY format. (3) Text should be in black ink on a white strip at the bottom of the photo. Our UPSC Format preset sets these as defaults. The text must be clearly readable — avoid very small font sizes.

3Can I add the text to the photo digitally, or do I need to print and write?

Both digital and physical methods are acceptable for UPSC. You can use this tool to add the text digitally before uploading — the result looks clean and professional. Alternatively, you can have a photo studio print it on a physical photo and then scan/photograph it. The digital method (using this tool) is faster and avoids the risk of messy handwriting.

4What should I write in the date field — today's date or the date the photo was taken?

You should write the date the photograph was taken — not today's date (unless you are photographing yourself today). UPSC wants the date to confirm the photo is recent (typically required to be taken within the last 6 months before the application date). If you cannot remember the exact date, use the approximate date — the important thing is that the photo is genuinely recent.

5Will the text strip make the photo size exceed UPSC's limit?

Our tool adds a small text strip below the photo (approximately 10–22 pixels tall), which increases the total height by a small margin. For UPSC (550×550px, 20–300 KB), after adding a text strip the height becomes approximately 560–575px. This is acceptable as UPSC does not enforce a strict max-pixel-height beyond the base requirement. The file size increase from the strip is negligible at JPEG compression.

6Does this tool work for any exam, or only UPSC?

While the UPSC text requirement is the most common use case, you can use this tool for any exam or application that requires text on the photo. The settings panel lets you fully customize font size (10–16px), text color (black or white), and background strip (white or none). For exams that require a completely clean photo without any text, simply do not use this tool.
