BPSSC Havildar Instructor Eligibility 2026: Age, 10+2 & Complete Criteria
Before you fill the BPSSC Havildar Instructor 2026 application form on bpssc.bihar.gov.in, check every eligibility criterion carefully. The most common rejection reasons are the age reference date trap (01/08/2025 — not the application date) and the education deadline (10+2 must be passed by 01/08/2025). This article covers every criterion with exact figures from the BPSSC Advt 05/2026 official notification.
📢 BPSSC Havildar Instructor 2026 Notification — 122 posts. Apply 1 May–1 Jun 2026. Fee ₹100 all categories.
Education Qualification — The Reference Date Trap
The education requirement is straightforward: you must have passed the 10+2 Intermediate examination from a recognised Board or equivalent. That includes all State Boards (BSEB, UP Board, CBSE, CISCE, etc.) and any board recognised by the Government of Bihar/India.
Critical point: Your 10+2 must be passed as on 01/08/2025 — not as on the application date (May 2026). If you appeared in the February/March 2026 board exam and your result comes in May 2026, you are not eligible for this recruitment. The reference date is August 2025 — your pass certificate must show a date on or before 01/08/2025.
| Qualification | Details |
|---|---|
| Minimum Education | 10+2 (Intermediate) from any recognised Board |
| Reference Date | Must have passed ON OR BEFORE 01/08/2025 |
| Stream Required | Any stream — Arts, Science, Commerce all valid |
| Private / Open School | Valid if board is recognised by Bihar Government |
| Appearing Candidates | Not eligible — result must be declared by 01/08/2025 |
Age Limit — All Categories
Age is calculated as on 01/08/2025. This is a frequent source of confusion — candidates calculate their age as of the application date (May 2026) and find themselves eligible, but the actual reference date is August 2025. Calculate your age as of 01/08/2025.
| Category | Gender | Minimum Age | Maximum Age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unreserved (UR) | Male | 18 years | 37 years |
| BC / EBC / Transgender | Male | 18 years | 40 years |
| SC / ST | Male | 18 years | 42 years |
| All Categories | Female | 18 years | 40 years |
| SC / ST | Female | 18 years | 42 years |
There is no separate EWS age relaxation mentioned in the notification. The relaxation categories are BC/EBC (+3 years for male) and SC/ST (+5 years for male, and female upper limit 40/42). Female candidates of all categories have an upper age limit of at least 40 — the same as BC/EBC male.
Age Calculation Walkthrough — Why the Reference Date Matters
Application opens: 1 May 2026. Reference date for age: 01/08/2025 — that is 9 months before the application opens. Here is why this matters in practice:
| Example Candidate | Date of Birth | Age on 01/08/2025 | Category | Eligible? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Candidate A | 15/09/1987 | 37 years, 10 months | UR Male | No — exceeds 37 years as on 01/08/2025 |
| Candidate B | 02/08/1988 | 36 years, 364 days | UR Male | Yes — age on 01/08/2025 is 36 years |
| Candidate C | 01/08/2007 | 18 years exactly | Any | Yes — just meets minimum age |
| Candidate D | 02/08/2007 | 17 years, 364 days | Any | No — below 18 as on 01/08/2025 |
Candidate A's birthday is September 1987 — they would be 37 years 10 months on 01/08/2025, which exceeds 37. Even though the application opens in May 2026, the age reference date is fixed at August 2025. If Candidate A applied using their age as of May 2026 (37 years, 7 months), they would incorrectly believe they're eligible.
Age Relaxation Details
| Category | Relaxation | Effective Upper Limit (UR Male base 37) |
|---|---|---|
| Bihar State Govt Employees | +5 years | UR: 42 | BC/EBC: 45 | SC/ST: 47 |
| Ex-Servicemen | +3 years + actual service period (max age 57) | As calculated per service; max cap at 57 |
For Ex-Servicemen: relaxation = 3 years + length of military service. If you served 10 years in the army and are 48 years old, your effective age for this exam is 48 minus (10 + 3) = 35 — within UR male limit of 37. The absolute cap is age 57 regardless of category or service length.
