BTSC Lab Assistant Eligibility 2026 – Qualification, Age Limit & Who Can Apply
BTSC's 1,091 Laboratory Assistant posts across 12 advertisements have a single core eligibility structure — with one important split: 11 advertisements accept Diploma holders, and one (Advt 12/2026, Science) requires a B.Sc degree. Getting this distinction wrong costs you an application fee and, more importantly, risks disqualification at document verification after clearing the CBT.
This guide covers every eligibility condition officially stated in BTSC Advt 02/2026 to 13/2026, verified against the notification published at btsc.bihar.gov.in on 03 April 2026.
Educational Qualification – The Core Condition
For Engineering Posts (Advt 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10, 11, 13)
You need one of the following — either is acceptable, not both required:
- Option A: 3-year Diploma in the relevant engineering branch from an AICTE-recognized institution, completed in regular (non-distance) mode.
- Option B: Degree (B.Tech / B.E.) in the relevant engineering branch from a UGC-recognized university, completed in regular (non-distance) mode.
Key clarifications:
- Distance education diplomas or degrees do not qualify, regardless of AICTE or UGC recognition of the parent institution.
- Your diploma or degree branch must match the specific advertisement's trade. A Diploma in Electrical Engineering qualifies for Advt 04/2026 (Electrical) — not for Advt 09/2026 (Computer Science). Mismatch at document verification = rejection.
- Diploma from state polytechnics (Bihar State Board of Technical Education) qualifies as long as the institution has AICTE recognition.
For Science Post (Advt 12/2026 – 164 vacancies)
This is a different condition entirely. You need:
- Bachelor's Degree (B.Sc) in Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics from a recognized University.
- Diploma does NOT qualify for this advertisement, even a 3-year science diploma.
- B.Sc in Biology/Zoology/Botany does NOT qualify — the notification specifies Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics only.

Age Limit – All Categories (As on 01 August 2026)
Age is calculated as of the reference date — 01 August 2026. Your date of birth in the application must match your 10th certificate or government ID. BTSC cross-checks this at document verification.
👉 BTSC Lab Assistant Salary 2026 — once you confirm eligibility, see exactly what Pay Level 6 means — city-wise in-hand breakdown
| Category | Minimum Age | Maximum Age |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS (Male) | 18 years | 37 years |
| General (Female) | 18 years | 40 years |
| OBC / EBC (Male) | 18 years | 40 years |
| OBC / EBC (Female) | 18 years | 40 years |
| SC / ST (Male) | 18 years | 42 years |
| SC / ST (Female) | 18 years | 42 years |
| PH (Physically Handicapped) | 18 years | 47 years (10 years over general) |
Three things worth noting here:
- Bihar gives females of General category 3 extra years (up to 40) over General males (37). OBC/EBC females and males both get 40. SC/ST males also get 42 — unlike many states where only females get extended limits.
- EWS males are treated at par with General males (37 years max) — no age relaxation for EWS on top of the general limit.
- If you turned 37 after 01 August 2026, you are ineligible for General/EWS male — no grace period beyond the reference date.
Age Relaxation for Existing Government Employees
Bihar government employees already in service (regular appointment) may be eligible for additional age relaxation per applicable state service rules. This applies to candidates in permanent state government positions applying through proper departmental channels. Contractual or daily-wage government workers do not automatically qualify for this relaxation — check the specific notification or your employer's HR department for confirmation.
Experience Weightage – The 25 Marks That Change Rankings
BTSC adds experience marks to CBT scores to create the final merit list. This is not bonus pay — it determines your rank in the selection list.
👉 BTSC Lab Assistant Syllabus 2026 — your 75-mark technical score plus experience weightage creates the final rank — know the full exam structure
| Experience Type | Marks Awarded |
|---|---|
| 0 years relevant experience | 0 marks |
| Up to 1 year relevant experience | Proportional marks (up to 25) |
| 3+ years relevant experience | Maximum 25 marks |
"Relevant experience" means work in a technical role directly related to your trade — lab work, teaching the trade subject in a polytechnic or ITI, technical field work in the discipline, or similar. Private-sector work in the relevant technical field qualifies. The experience certificate must be on letterhead, include your designation, date of joining, date of leaving (or "continuing"), with employer signature and seal. BTSC verifies these during document verification — fake or vague certificates lead to cancellation of candidature.
Domicile Requirement
Bihar domicile is mandatory for reserved category (SC, ST, OBC, EBC, EWS) posts. Unreserved (General/UR) posts are open to candidates from any state. Practically, since most Lab Assistant vacancies include a significant UR component, out-of-state candidates can apply for UR vacancies in the relevant trade. Reserved category benefit (age relaxation, reservation in merit list) is available only to Bihar domicile holders with valid caste certificates issued by Bihar authorities.
Application Fee
₹100 for all categories — General, OBC, SC, ST, Female, PH. This uniform flat fee applies to each advertisement separately. If you apply under two advertisements (for example, if your CS diploma qualifies you for both CS and IT variants under Advt 09/2026), you pay the fee once per application. Read whether BTSC permits multiple applications within the same notification before applying for more than one advertisement.
Documents Required at Application & Verification
- 10th Mark Sheet and Certificate (for date of birth proof)
- Diploma or Degree Certificate and Mark Sheets (all semesters/years)
- Provisional Certificate if final degree is pending — check BTSC's specific instruction on this
- Caste Certificate from Bihar competent authority (OBC/EBC/SC/ST applicants)
- EWS Certificate from Bihar (for EWS applicants) — must be for the current financial year

- Recent passport-size photograph
- Signature (scanned for online application)
- Aadhaar card or other government-issued photo ID
Who Cannot Apply
- Candidates with distance-mode diploma or degree (regardless of marks or institute reputation)
- Candidates whose diploma trade does not match the advertisement they are applying for

- Diploma holders attempting Advt 12/2026 (Science post requires B.Sc, not diploma)
- General male candidates above 37 years of age as on 01 August 2026
- Candidates who have been debarred from government service or whose applications have been rejected in previous BTSC recruitments for misconduct
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. I have a Diploma in Computer Science from a private polytechnic. Am I eligible?
Yes, if your polytechnic is AICTE-recognized and your diploma was completed in regular (non-distance) mode. The institution's AICTE approval status can be verified at aicte-india.org. State polytechnics affiliated with SBTE Bihar are typically AICTE-approved.
Q2. My diploma is in Information Technology (IT). Can I apply for Advt 09/2026 (Computer Science / IT)?
Yes. Advt 09/2026 explicitly covers both Computer Science and IT. IT diploma holders are eligible for this advertisement.
Q3. I have both a Diploma in Electrical and a B.Tech in Electrical. Which qualification do I list?
List the higher qualification (B.Tech). Both satisfy the eligibility condition, but listing your degree may be relevant if it affects experience weightage calculations. The core eligibility — possessing either diploma or degree — is fulfilled in either case.
Q4. My B.Sc is in Botany / Zoology. Can I apply for Advt 12/2026?
No. Advt 12/2026 specifically requires B.Sc in Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics. Biology-stream B.Sc graduates are not eligible for this advertisement.
Q5. I'm 38 years old and belong to General (Male) category. Can I apply?
No. General male upper age limit is 37 years as on 01 August 2026. At 38, you are over the limit. OBC/EBC, SC/ST, or female categories have higher limits — if you fall into any relaxation-eligible category, check your revised upper age limit from the table above.
Q6. My diploma is from another state (e.g., UP or Jharkhand). Am I eligible?
Educational qualification from any AICTE-recognized institution regardless of state is valid. What matters is your domicile for reserved category benefits — not where your diploma was obtained. Unreserved posts are open to all-India candidates.
Q7. Is there any minimum marks requirement in the diploma or degree?
BTSC's notification for Lab Assistant 2026 does not specify a minimum percentage in the qualifying exam. Any pass in the diploma or degree in the relevant trade satisfies the qualification condition.
Q8. Can I apply to multiple advertisements if my trade is relevant to more than one?
Each advertisement is a separate recruitment. If your qualification genuinely matches multiple advertisements (for example, a Mechanical Diploma that covers both Mechanical and Automobile trade), you may apply for each separately with separate application fees. Verify this against BTSC's specific instructions in the official notification before submitting multiple applications.
Document Checklist — What to Keep Ready Before Applying
BTSC Lab Assistant applications are submitted online, but document upload at the time of application and physical submission at document verification are separate stages. Preparing these in advance prevents last-minute rejections:
For qualification proof: Final Mark Sheet + Certificate of your diploma or degree in the relevant trade. If results are recently declared and the final certificate is pending, a provisional certificate or a result notification from the university/board is acceptable at the application stage — but the original must be produced at document verification.
For age proof: Class 10 (Matric) certificate or mark sheet is the standard document. Birth certificates from municipal authorities are also accepted if the school document is not available.
For category certificates (OBC-NCL / SC / ST / EWS): Certificates must be from the prescribed authority (SDO/Circle Officer level or above for Bihar). OBC-NCL certificates must specifically state "Non-Creamy Layer" — a general OBC certificate without this phrase is not valid for reservation purposes. EWS certificates must be issued in the format prescribed by the Government of India (2019 notification format).
For experience (if applicable): Certificate from the Head of Institution on official letterhead, specifying designation, dates of employment, and nature of work. This must match your employment records exactly.
For Bihar domicile (for reserved category benefits): Resident certificate from the district administration, or proof of permanent address in Bihar (ration card, Aadhar with Bihar address, voter ID with Bihar address).
Trade-Wise Vacancy Distribution — Which Advertisement to Apply For
BTSC issued 12 separate advertisements (Advt. 02/2026 to 13/2026) for 1,091 posts across different trades. The largest vacancy blocks are in Computer Science (Advt. 02/2026) and Electrical (Advt. 04/2026). Candidates whose trade spans multiple disciplines should verify the specific qualification listed in each advertisement before applying — the distinction between, for example, Computer Science and Information Technology, or Electrical and Electronics, is sometimes made explicit in the post-specific qualification clause.
Applying for the wrong advertisement — even with a closely related qualification — will result in rejection at document verification, with no refund of application fee. Confirm your diploma trade name matches the exact trade listed in the advertisement you apply for.
