The Forensic Science Laboratory, Government of NCT of Delhi hires Junior Scientific Assistants (JSA) across six technical divisions. Each division has its own specific educational requirement — and this is where most candidates either qualify or don't. Knowing the exact requirement for your division before you start the application saves a lot of confusion.
This is not a generic "graduate required" job. The minimum is a Master's degree in a relevant science subject, or in some cases a B.E./B.Tech in an engineering discipline. The age cap is 27 years. No written exam, only interview. Selection is straightforward — but getting shortlisted depends entirely on whether your degree matches the division you're applying for.

Age Limit — What You Need to Know
The maximum age is 27 years as of the notification date (January 15, 2026 for the recent batch). This is stricter than most central government exams. If you're 28 or above, you'd need to wait for a notification that offers age relaxation.
Age relaxation details are not explicitly listed in the 2026 notification for contract posts, but standard Delhi government rules may apply for SC/ST/OBC/PwD candidates. Always check the official notification PDF for the exact relaxation category-wise table before applying.
| Category |
Maximum Age |
| General / UR | 27 years |
| OBC (Delhi Domicile) | As per official notification |
| SC / ST | As per official notification |
| PwD | As per official notification |
For the exact category-wise age relaxation applicable to you, download the official notification PDF from fsl.delhi.gov.in before filling the form.
Can I Apply with Only a B.Sc.?
Generally, no. Most divisions require a Master's degree (M.Sc./MCA). The only exception is the engineering path — if you have a B.E./B.Tech in Biotechnology (for Biology division) or B.E./B.Tech in CS/IT/ECE/EE (for Cyber Forensic division), you qualify without an M.Sc.
A plain B.Sc. — even in Forensic Science — does not meet the minimum bar for any JSA division. The Forensic Science M.Sc. can qualify you for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Ballistics divisions depending on which subject you studied at B.Sc. level — but again, that's an M.Sc., not B.Sc.
M.Sc. Forensic Science Eligibility — Read This Carefully
If you have an M.Sc. in Forensic Science, your eligibility depends on what you studied at the B.Sc. level. This is a rule that catches many applicants off-guard:
| M.Sc. Forensic Science + B.Sc. subjects studied |
You can apply for |
| B.Sc. had Zoology or Botany | Biology division |
| B.Sc. had Chemistry (all 3 years) | Chemistry division |
| B.Sc. had Physics (2+ years / 4 semesters) | Physics division |
| B.Sc. had Physics/Maths (all 3 years) | Ballistics division |
| B.Sc. had Computer Science / Electronics | Not automatically — check MCA/M.Tech route |
In other words, your M.Sc. Forensic Science degree alone doesn't determine which division you apply for — your B.Sc. combination is equally important. If your B.Sc. had Physics, Chemistry, AND Zoology (a common combination), you technically have the choice of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Ballistics divisions based on which subjects you studied for how long.
What No Other Site Explains About FSL Eligibility
Three things the job portals skip:
1. The Cyber Forensic division has 14 out of 26 posts — and it's also the most competitive. If you have a B.Tech in CS or an MCA, you qualify for the biggest division. But so does every other CS graduate in Delhi. The interview panel for Cyber Forensic will ask technical questions on networks, digital evidence, OS forensics, and incident response. Qualifying on paper is the easy part.
2. Lie-Detection is often overlooked — and has low applicant count. Only M.Sc. Psychology or Criminology candidates can apply for this division. It has 2 posts and comparatively fewer eligible candidates. If this is your background, the probability of clearing the interview is higher than the Cyber Forensic or Biology divisions.
3. Your degree must be from a recognized Indian university. The notification specifies that qualifications should be from a recognized university. Candidates with foreign degrees or distance education qualifications should confirm acceptance with FSL before applying. The lab has previously rejected applications where the degree was from an unrecognized institute.

Submit the application to: Head of Office, Forensic Science Laboratory, Rohini Sector-14, New Delhi – 110085
Who Should NOT Apply
A few honest disqualifiers that save you time:
- If your highest degree is B.Sc. (non-engineering), you do not qualify — full stop.
- If your M.Sc. is in a subject not listed for any division (e.g., M.Sc. Mathematics without FSL application, M.Sc. Economics), you don't qualify.
- If you're above 27 years and there's no age relaxation for your category, wait for the next notification which may have a different age cap.
- If your M.Sc. Forensic Science B.Sc. combination doesn't match any division's requirement — check carefully before applying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can a B.Tech CSE graduate apply for the Cyber Forensic division?
Yes. B.E./B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics & Communication, or Electrical & Electronics all qualify for the Cyber Forensic division JSA post. You don't need an M.Sc. if you have the relevant B.Tech.
Q: I have M.Sc. Biotechnology but not B.Tech Biotechnology — can I apply for Biology?
Yes. M.Sc. Biotechnology is listed explicitly as a qualifying degree for the Biology division. You're eligible.
Q: I'm 28 years old. Can I still apply?
The general age limit is 27 years as per the 2026 notification. If you're in an SC/ST/OBC/PwD category, there may be age relaxation — check the official notification PDF for exact numbers. At 28 years with no relaxation applicable, you'd need to wait for the next cycle which may have different parameters.
Q: Does M.Sc. Psychology qualify for any division other than Lie-Detection?
Based on the 2026 notification requirements, M.Sc. Psychology specifically qualifies only for the Lie-Detection division. It does not meet the criteria for Biology, Chemistry, Cyber Forensic, Physics, or Ballistics.
Q: Is work experience mandatory for JSA?
No mandatory work experience is required for the JSA post. It is an entry-level scientific position. However, relevant lab experience (internships, project work, research) strengthens your interview performance significantly.
Q: Can I apply for more than one division?
The notification typically allows candidates to apply for one division only. Check the official notification PDF for any specific instruction on multiple division applications. In practice, most candidates apply for only the division matching their primary qualification.
How to Calculate Your Age for the Notification Date
Delhi FSL sets age as "not exceeding 27 years as on [date]." Calculating this is straightforward but mistakes happen. Here's the exact method:
If the notification date is January 15, 2026 and your date of birth is January 16, 1999 — you are exactly 27 years old on that date. You qualify. If your birthday is January 14, 1999 — you turned 27 one day before, so you're still 27. You qualify. But if you were born January 16, 1998 — you turned 28 before the cutoff date. You don't qualify.
The calculation: Age = Notification Date minus Date of Birth. Use an age calculator if in doubt — don't estimate. One wrong day can invalidate your application during scrutiny.
Common Eligibility Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected
These are the most frequent errors, drawn from how FSL screening typically works for Delhi government contract positions:
- Applying for Biology with M.Sc. Forensic Science but B.Sc. had no Biology subject. Your M.Sc. Forensic Science alone doesn't qualify you for Biology — you need Zoology or Botany in your B.Sc. combination. This is the most common rejection reason for Forensic Science graduates.
- MCA claimed as M.Sc. Computer Science. MCA and M.Sc. CS are different degrees. FSL explicitly lists MCA as qualifying — so this isn't a problem per se, but some candidates try to claim MCA as equivalent to M.Sc. in other contexts. Read the exact words of the notification.
- Age calculated wrongly because of an IGNOU or distance education degree start date. Your educational qualification year is not counted toward age — only your birth date matters. Don't confuse the two.
- Sending the application after the last date because of postal delay. Applications must reach FSL by the last date. "Posted before last date" is not accepted. Always send 5–7 days before the deadline via Speed Post with tracking.
What If You Have Multiple M.Sc. Degrees?
If you hold more than one master's degree (e.g., M.Sc. Chemistry AND M.Sc. Forensic Science), you can choose which degree to use for your application — but you apply for one division only. Pick the division where your subject combination most strongly matches. Having two degrees doesn't give you priority over a candidate with one degree.
