Paper 1 vs Paper 2: How HPCL CBT Is Structured

Unlike GATE-based PSU recruitment (where your exam score is used directly), HPCL conducts its own Computer Based Test. The CBT has two papers attempted together in one 150-minute session — no separate sitting.

FeaturePaper 1 — Aptitude & GeneralPaper 2 — Technical (Discipline-wise)
Total Questions85 questions85 questions
Total Marks85 marks85 marks
Total CBT Marks170 marks (combined)
Negative Marking0.25 per wrong answer0.25 per wrong answer
SubjectsEnglish + Quantitative Aptitude + Reasoning + General AwarenessCore technical subjects of your discipline
Time Allowed150 minutes combined for both papers
Basis for ShortlistingCombined 170-mark CBT score → Group Task → Merit

The CBT score accounts for 100% of initial shortlisting — there is no GD/interview in the traditional sense. The final stage is a Group Task (GT), which is an observed group discussion format. Merit list is drawn combining CBT + GT marks.

Discipline-wise Technical Topics: What HPCL Actually Tests

HPCL's technical paper is deeper than typical PSU aptitude papers. Questions test refinery-specific applications of engineering concepts, not just textbook theory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is HPCL CBT online or offline?

Computer Based Test — conducted at designated test centres across India. Not from home. You report to an assigned centre with your admit card and ID proof.

Q: What is the Group Task in HPCL selection?

Group Task is a structured group discussion where 8–12 candidates discuss a topic (usually business/engineering/current affairs). Assessors evaluate leadership, communication, listening, and teamwork — not just who speaks most. It lasts 20–30 minutes. Unlike a GD, there's no winner/loser; the whole group is assessed together.

Q: Can I apply for HPCL JE without a GATE score?

Yes. HPCL JE recruitment is based on its own CBT — you do not need a GATE score or rank. You only need 65% aggregate in your BE/B.Tech/B.Sc Engg degree (55% for SC/ST) and to be within the age limit of 25 years (General) or 28 years (SC/ST).

Q: How many times can I apply for HPCL JE?

There is no lifetime attempt limit specified by HPCL. You can apply each time a notification is released, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria (particularly the age limit). Once you cross the maximum age, you become ineligible regardless of attempts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there negative marking in HPCL JE CBT 2026?

Yes — HPCL JE CBT 2026 has negative marking. The exact penalty per wrong answer should be verified in the official notification (typically -0.25 or -0.33 per wrong answer in HPCL exams). With negative marking, the strategy is identical to any negative-marking PSU exam: attempt when you can eliminate 2 of 4 options; skip when you have zero knowledge. Random guessing costs more marks than it earns.

Q: Can a diploma holder clear HPCL JE Technical Paper?

Yes — in fact, HPCL JE is specifically designed for diploma-level technical knowledge. The technical paper tests application of engineering principles at the diploma/polytechnic level, not at the B.Tech graduate research depth that GATE demands. Diploma holders who have 2-3 years of hands-on refinery, plant, or industrial training are actually better positioned for Paper 2 than fresh B.Tech graduates with only theoretical knowledge.

Q: How does HPCL JE selection compare to GATE-based PSUs like CIL or NHPC?

HPCL JE is fundamentally different from GATE-based PSU selection. With GATE PSUs (CIL, NHPC, NMDC, NALCO), your GATE score dominates 70-100% of the selection weight. With HPCL JE, a 170-question CBT you appear in fresh determines your rank — there is no historical score advantage. This makes HPCL JE a more democratic process where current preparation matters more than a historic GATE performance. It also means HPCL JE competition includes every eligible candidate who registers, not just GATE-qualified applicants.

Q: What is asked in the HPCL Group Task (GT) stage?

HPCL Group Task typically involves 6-8 candidates given a problem scenario and asked to discuss and reach a consensus solution within a fixed time (15-20 minutes). Evaluators observe initiative, communication clarity, ability to build on others ideas, and group behaviour. Unlike a GD (where speaking the most can seem effective), GT rewards collaborative problem-solving. Practise structured discussion: state your view, acknowledge others' points, build toward a group solution rather than winning the argument.

Q: Which discipline has the highest competition in HPCL JE 2026?

Mechanical Engineering has the highest total posts (around 207) which attracts the largest applicant pool — GATE ME consistently has 70,000+ candidates. However, since HPCL uses its own CBT rather than GATE normalization, the competition dynamics are different from GATE-based PSUs. All disciplines compete on the same Paper 1 (General Aptitude), and Paper 2 difficulty is calibrated discipline-by-discipline. In terms of posts-to-applicants ratio, Chemical Engineering and Quality Control typically have fewer applicants relative to available posts.

Aksar Puche Jaane Waale Prashan

Q: Kya diploma holder HPCL JE Technical Paper clear kar sakta hai?

Haan — HPCL JE specifically diploma-level technical knowledge ke liye designed hai. Technical paper application-oriented hai, GATE ki tarah deep theory nahin. 2-3 saal hands-on experience wale diploma holders Paper 2 mein fresh B.Tech graduates se better perform kar sakte hain.

Q: HPCL Group Task mein kya hota hai?

6-8 candidates ko ek problem scenario diya jaata hai aur 15-20 minutes mein group discussion + consensus solution banana hota hai. Evaluators: initiative, communication clarity, group collaboration observe karte hain. GD jaisa nahin — yahin zyada bolna best nahin. Collaborative problem-solving reward hoti hai.

Q: Kaunsa discipline mein competition sabse kam hai HPCL JE mein?

Chemical Engineering aur Quality Control mein posts relatively kam hain lekin applicant pool bhi smaller hai. Mechanical mein sabse zyada posts hain (~207) lekin applicant pool bhi largest hai. HPCL apna CBT conduct karta hai GATE normalization nahin hai — isliye ratio matter karta hai, sirf post count nahin.

HPCL CBT का Structure: Paper 1 और Paper 2

Total 170 marks।

Discipline-wise Technical Topics

Mechanical में thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat exchangers। Electrical में power systems, hazardous area classification। Instrumentation में DCS/SCADA, process control। Chemical में distillation, hydrotreating। Fire & Safety में HAZOP, OISD standards।

HPCL CBT vs GATE-based PSU:

GATE-based PSUs (NALCO, GAIL)

Facts

Mumbai refinery 7.5 MMTPA, Vizag 8.3 MMTPA।

Month-wise Preparation Plan

MonthPaper 1 FocusPaper 2 (Technical) FocusProductivity Target
Month 1Quantitative Aptitude — Number System, Percentages, Ratio, Profit-LossCore subjects revision — थर्मोडायनामिक्स, fluid mechanics (first 50%)4 hours/day
Month 2Reasoning — Syllogism, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, PuzzlesCore subjects complete + HPCL-specific topics (refinery equipment, OISD)5 hours/day
Month 3English grammar, RC + General Awareness (petroleum GK, current affairs)Mock tests + weak area revision6 hours/day
Exam WeekMock tests only, time management practiceFormula revision + quick notes3-4 hours/day (light)

Strategy
