NHPC Trainee Engineer Eligibility 2026: B.Tech 60%, GATE Score, Age 30 — Complete Guide
NHPC Trainee Engineer eligibility has three gates: a B.Tech/B.E. in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering with 60%+ marks, a valid GATE score in the same discipline, and being under 30 years of age. All three must be satisfied. Unlike exams that have complex eligibility matrices, NHPC TE is refreshingly simple — if you have the degree, the marks, and the GATE score, you're eligible to apply.

GATE Score: What NHPC Requires
A valid GATE score in your discipline is mandatory — you cannot apply to NHPC TE without one. Key points:
- GATE scores are valid for 3 years from the result date. For a 2026 NHPC notification, GATE 2024, GATE 2025, and GATE 2026 are all typically valid
- You must have appeared in the GATE paper matching your B.Tech discipline — Civil B.Tech → GATE CE paper, not any other
- NHPC does not require a minimum GATE score in the notification. The shortlisting is merit-based — top-N candidates per discipline based on GATE score are called for DV
- If you have appeared in GATE multiple times, NHPC typically allows you to use the best valid score — confirm in the specific notification
Application Fee
| Category | Application Fee |
|---|---|
| General / OBC-NCL / EWS | ₹500 (non-refundable) |
| SC / ST | Nil — fee exempted |
| PwD (Persons with Disabilities) | Nil — fee exempted |
| Ex-Servicemen | Nil — fee exempted |
Service Bond
NHPC requires Trainee Engineers to sign a service bond before joining. The bond period in past NHPC notifications has been 2 years (shorter than NMDC's 3-year bond). If you leave NHPC within the bond period, you must pay a penalty as specified in the offer letter (typically ₹1–2 lakh — verify in your specific notification).
The 2-year bond is relatively light — if you join NHPC and then receive a better PSU offer after 2 years, you can leave without a major financial penalty. This makes NHPC a reasonable "first PSU" while you continue aiming for Navratna PSUs like NTPC or PGCIL.
Category-wise Reservation
| Category | Reservation | Age Relaxation |
|---|---|---|
| UR (Unreserved) | — | Nil |
| EWS | 10% | Nil over UR |
| OBC-NCL | 27% | +3 years |
| SC | 15% | +5 years |
| ST | 7.5% | +5 years |
| PwD | 4% (horizontal) | +10 years |
About NHPC: Why This PSU Matters
NHPC Limited — National Hydroelectric Power Corporation — is a Mini Ratna Category-I CPSE under the Ministry of Power. It is India's largest hydropower development company, with an installed capacity of approximately 7,097 MW from 25 power stations. NHPC's projects span Himachal Pradesh (Parbati, Chamera, Baira Siul), Uttarakhand (Tanakpur, Koteshwar), Jammu & Kashmir (Uri I & II, Salal, Dulhasti), Manipur (Loktak), Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh (Subansiri Lower — 2,000 MW, India's largest under-construction hydropower project).
NHPC also operates India's only major pumped storage project under development. With the government's massive hydropower push under the "Hydro Purchase Obligation" policy, NHPC is set for significant capacity expansion over the next decade — making it a growing employer for Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical engineers.

OBC-NCL Certificate for NHPC: What Must Be on It
OBC-NCL certificate requirements for NHPC are the same as any central PSU. This is where many candidates get rejected at DV despite being genuinely OBC:
- Central Government OBC list: Your caste must be in the Central OBC list (maintained by NCBC). Being in your state's OBC list is insufficient. To verify, visit ncbc.nic.in and check the list for your state.
- Non-Creamy Layer (NCL) explicitly stated: The certificate must say "Non-Creamy Layer" or "does not belong to creamy layer." A general OBC certificate without NCL mention is rejected.
- Issuing authority: Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) / Revenue Division Officer (RDO) / District Magistrate (DM) — not Tehsildar unless your state specifically authorizes Tehsildar for central OBC certificates
- Date validity: Most NHPC notifications require OBC-NCL certificate issued within 1 year of the application deadline. Do not submit an older certificate.
- Annual income ceiling: Family income from all sources below ₹8 lakh/year (enhanced threshold, applicable since 2017)
