GATE Score Requirement — What You Need to Know
NMDC requires a valid GATE score at the time of application — you cannot apply without one. "Valid" means your score has not expired (GATE scores are valid for 3 years from the year of the exam). So for a 2026 NMDC notification, GATE 2024, GATE 2025, or GATE 2026 scores all qualify.
NMDC uses your GATE score for 70% of the final merit. You are shortlisted for GD/PI based on GATE score. There is no NMDC-specified minimum GATE score cutoff published in the notification — but in practice, candidates with scores below the 50th percentile in their discipline rarely make it to the GD stage in competitive disciplines like ME and EE.
Application Fee
| Category | Fee |
|---|---|
| General / OBC / EWS | ₹500 (non-refundable) |
| SC / ST | Nil — fee waived |
| PwD (Persons with Disabilities) | Nil — fee waived |
| Ex-Servicemen | Nil — fee waived |
| Departmental (NMDC employees) | Nil — fee waived |
Service Bond — 3 Years Commitment
Before joining NMDC, you must sign a service bond committing to serve for a minimum of 3 years. If you leave before 3 years, you are required to pay a penalty (bond amount — typically ₹2–3 lakh, check current notification for exact amount). This is standard practice for PSUs that invest in training fresh engineers, particularly for specialized terrains like NMDC's mine sites.
If you're simultaneously preparing for UPSC, GATE for IIT/NIT, or other competitive exams, factor the 3-year bond carefully before accepting an NMDC offer.

About NMDC — Why This PSU Matters
NMDC Limited — National Mineral Development Corporation — is a Navratna CPSE under the Ministry of Steel. It is India's largest iron ore producer, mining approximately 45 million tonnes per year from its four mechanized mines: Bailadila Deposit 14/11C, Bailadila Deposit 5, Bailadila Deposit 10/11A (all in Chhattisgarh), and Donimalai + Kumaraswamy in Karnataka. NMDC also operates India's only mechanized diamond mine at Panna, Madhya Pradesh.
NMDC is consistently profitable, with revenues around ₹20,000 crore and a strong dividend track record. In 2022, NMDC demerged its Nagarnar Steel Plant into a separate entity (NMDC Steel Ltd) — the first steel plant commissioned by an iron ore company in India. For engineers joining NMDC ET, the work involves direct contribution to India's core minerals and steel supply chain — not an administrative desk job.
How NMDC Calculates Your Aggregate Percentage
The 60% threshold is applied to your aggregate B.Tech/B.E. marks across all semesters/years. Here is how to calculate yours correctly:
| Grading System | How to Calculate | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage system | Sum of all semester %age ÷ number of semesters (or use final consolidated marksheet) | If your consolidated marksheet shows 63.4% → you qualify |
| CGPA (10-point scale) | NMDC typically asks for conversion using your university's official formula. If no formula: CGPA × 9.5 is commonly used | CGPA 7.0 × 9.5 = 66.5% → qualifies |
| CGPA (7-point scale) | Many older universities use 7-point scale; use CGPA/7 × 100 as a rough estimate, or use official conversion | CGPA 4.8/7 × 100 = 68.6% → qualifies |
| Letter grades only | Get your official grade-to-percentage conversion letter from the university registrar | Always attach this letter with your application |
