UPESSC has announced 17,735 Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) posts for Uttar Pradesh's aided secondary schools under Advertisement No. 07/2026, dated 23 October 2026. That makes it one of the biggest teacher recruitments in the state, and the window is short: online fee payment closes on 23 November 2026 and the written exam is on 23 and 24 December 2026. This guide goes through the official advertisement page by page, covering how the posts split by subject, who is actually eligible for each subject, how the 360-mark exam works, and the form mistakes that cost people their application. Every number below is from the official advertisement on upessc.up.gov.in, with the page reference in brackets.
If you only want the dates, fee and apply link, the UP TGT 2026 online form page has them in one place. This article is for the questions that come after: Can I apply with my subjects? Which subject has the most seats? How should I prepare in the time that is left?

Subject-Wise Vacancies: Where the 17,735 Seats Are
The advertisement's Table 01 (p.14) lists vacancies for 17 subjects. The order matters more than people realise, because your chances depend on the subject you apply in, not on the headline number.
| Subject | Posts |
|---|---|
| Hindi | 2,791 |
| English | 2,517 |
| Science | 2,493 |
| Social Science | 2,482 |
| Mathematics | 2,349 |
| Sanskrit | 1,289 |
| Physical Education | 849 |
| Home Science | 798 |
| Art | 775 |
| Biology | 660 |
| Agriculture | 248 |
| Commerce | 134 |
| Urdu | 103 |
| Music (Vocal) | 87 |
| Ranjan Kala | 79 |
| Music (Instrumental) | 60 |
| Sewing | 21 |
| Total | 17,735 |
Three things stand out in this table:
- The five big subjects — Hindi, English, Science, Social Science and Maths — hold 12,632 posts, about 71% of the total. Each has more than 2,300 seats, so these are where most of the selections will happen.
- Sanskrit (1,289) is the largest of the "middle" subjects, and Physical Education, Home Science and Art each have close to 800 seats. If you are eligible for one of these, the competition per seat can be very different from the big five.
- Several subjects have very few seats: Commerce 134, Urdu 103, the two Music subjects 147 together, Ranjan Kala 79 and Sewing 21. Here a few marks decide everything, so accuracy matters more than speed.
The advertisement also says the number of posts may increase or decrease (p.4, para 5.2), so treat these as the current figures, not final ones.
By category and by school type
Across all subjects, the category split is: General 6,704 · OBC 4,438 · SC 3,698 · EWS 2,882 · ST 13. Of the 17,735 posts, 16,193 are in boys' (Balak) schools and 1,542 in girls' (Balika) schools (p.4).
Eligibility: The General Rule
For almost every subject, a TGT candidate needs three things (p.6–8):
- Graduation with the relevant subject(s) with at least 50% marks, or a postgraduate degree in that subject with at least 45%;
- a B.Ed from an NCTE-recognised course; and
- a pass in the TET for upper primary level (classes 6–8), conducted by Uttar Pradesh or the Government of India.
The TET point is the one that catches people. A primary-level (classes 1–5) TET alone is not what the advertisement asks for; it asks for the upper-primary TET. If you are still deciding which TET paper to take, our UPTET eligibility guide and UPTET Paper 2 syllabus explain the difference.
Subject-Wise Eligibility: The Traps
The exact requirement changes from subject to subject, and this is where most rejected applications come from. These are the rows of the advertisement that people most often misread (p.6–7):
| Subject | What the advertisement asks for |
|---|---|
| Hindi | Hindi in graduation (≥50%) or PG in Hindi (≥45%), and Sanskrit as a subject in Intermediate, or UP Sanskrit Shiksha Parishad's Uttar Madhyama |
| English | English literature in graduation (≥50%) or PG (≥45%) |
| Mathematics | Maths in graduation (≥50%) or PG (≥45%) |
| Science | Both Physics and Chemistry in graduation (≥50%), or PG (≥45%) in one of them |
| Biology | Both Zoology and Botany in graduation (≥50%), or PG (≥45%) in one of them |
| Social Science | Any two of History, Geography, Political Science and Economics in graduation (≥50%), or PG (≥45%) in one of the graduation subjects |
| Physical Education | Any graduation (≥50%) or PG (≥45%), plus B.P.Ed or B.P.E. instead of B.Ed, plus TET |
What this means in practice:
- Hindi needs Sanskrit at the Intermediate level. A Hindi graduate who did not have Sanskrit in Class 12 (or Uttar Madhyama) does not meet the Hindi row as written.
- A B.Sc. with Physics, Chemistry and Maths fits Science. A B.Sc. with Zoology, Botany and Chemistry fits Biology, not Science, because Science needs Physics as well.
- Social Science needs two of the four listed subjects in graduation. A BA with History alone, plus Hindi and English, does not meet it.
- Physical Education is the one subject where B.Ed is replaced by B.P.Ed or B.P.E.
For Sanskrit, Home Science, Art, Agriculture, Commerce, Urdu, Music, Ranjan Kala and Sewing, open the advertisement and read your subject's row in the eligibility table before paying the fee. Each one has its own subject combination.
One thing the advertisement does not say clearly
The advertisement gives two different points for when you must hold the qualification. Paragraph 2.9 on page 3 ties it to the last date of application, while the note on page 8 mentions 30.06.2027. We are not going to guess which one UPESSC will apply. If you are still completing your B.Ed or TET, the safe course is to be qualified by the last date, and to watch upessc.up.gov.in for any clarification before you rely on the later date.
Age Limit and Pay
You must be at least 21 years old on 01.07.2026, and the application is not accepted if you are older than 62 on that date (p.2, para 2.7 and p.5). The upper limit is unusually high because the retirement age for the post is 62, so this recruitment is open to experienced teachers and career-changers, not only fresh graduates.
The post is in Pay Level 7, ₹44,900 – ₹1,42,400 (p.5). That is the basic pay range; the actual monthly amount also depends on the dearness allowance and other allowances in force when you join, which the advertisement does not list.
Exam Pattern: 120 Questions, 360 Marks, 2 Hours
Selection is made from the merit of a single written exam (p.8–9). The advertisement does not mention an interview.
| Part | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Knowledge | 30 | 90 |
| Your subject | 90 | 270 |
| Total | 120 | 360 |
- Duration: 2 hours — exactly one minute per question.
- Marking: +3 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong answer or for marking more than one option.
- Format: objective, four options per question, on an OMR answer sheet.
- Language: Hindi and English, except for the language subjects.
- OMR rules: black ballpoint pen only; no whitener or eraser; a bubble once filled cannot be changed.
- Tie-break: higher graduation percentage, then higher training (B.Ed) percentage, then the older candidate.
What +3 / −1 means for guessing
The marking scheme changes how you should treat a question you are unsure about. With four options and +3 / −1:
- A pure blind guess is worth zero on average (¼ × 3 − ¾ × 1 = 0). It neither helps nor hurts over many questions, but it adds risk.
- If you can rule out one option, a guess among the remaining three is worth +⅓ mark on average.
- If you can rule out two options, a guess between the last two is worth +1 mark on average.
So the rule for the exam hall is simple: skip questions you know nothing about, but attempt any question where you can confidently eliminate at least one option. Across 120 questions, that habit alone can be worth several marks, and with this many candidates per seat, several marks is a lot of ranks.
The subject part carries 270 of the 360 marks (75%). General Knowledge matters, but your subject is what ranks you.
The General Knowledge Syllabus (30 Questions)
UPESSC's official TGT/PGT General Knowledge syllabus has three units:
- Current affairs — state, national and international events; people in the news; sports.
- History, polity, economy and geography — Indian history and the national movement; the Constitution and polity, including legal and constitutional developments related to education; the Indian economy; basic Indian geography and population.
- Science, technology and education — general science, technology and environment; human health and hygiene (vitamins, minerals, diseases, deficiency diseases, hormones, enzymes); computer and internet terms; uses of ICT; developments in educational technology.
The syllabus page on upessc.up.gov.in lists a new syllabus "effective for exams from 2026" for every TGT subject, alongside older versions. Download the 2026 one for your subject, not an older PDF from a coaching site.
An 8-Week Preparation Plan for 23–24 December
From the end of October there are roughly eight weeks to the exam. A plan that fits that time:
| Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1–2 | Finish the form (OTR, fee, documents) in the first days. Download your subject's 2026 syllabus and mark each topic as strong, average or weak. |
| 3–5 | Subject first: your weak and average topics, at graduation level. Add GK Units 2 and 3 (history, polity, science) for about an hour a day. |
| 6 | Current affairs (Unit 1): the last 6–8 months of state and national events, education-related schemes and sports. |
| 7 | Full timed mocks: 120 questions in 120 minutes, on a printed OMR-style sheet with a black pen, to practise not changing answers. |
| 8 | Revision only — formulas, dates, your own notes. No new topics. |
Two habits to build in the mocks: mark answers in one pass rather than going back to change them, since a filled bubble cannot be changed in the real exam; and track how many "one option eliminated" guesses turned out right. That tells you how far to trust your guessing on the day.
How to Apply: Step by Step
- One Time Registration (OTR) first. You cannot apply without it (p.2, para 2.2). The user manual and tutorial videos are on upessc.up.gov.in.
- Fill the form in English (para 2.11). Enter your date of birth exactly as in your High School certificate (para 2.10).
- Upload your photo and signature as JPG/JPEG files of 10–100 KB each, with the signature on a white background (para 2.13). Documents go as PDFs of 20–200 KB (para 2.14).
- Check category, sub-category, date of birth and gender before the final submit — these cannot be changed afterwards (para 2.4).
- Pay the fee online by credit card, debit card or net banking (para 3.1) by 23 November 2026. The fee is not refunded.
- Take three printouts of the final application. Two sets are needed at document verification (para 2.16).
If you submit more than once, only your last application is considered (para 2.12). Corrections are possible until 26 November 2026.
