What Does a BTSC Instructor Job Actually Mean for an ITI Graduate?

Most ITI graduates spend years working on the shop floor — as technicians, fitters, wiremen, or operators — and never think about teaching as a career option. Bihar BTSC Instructor (Anudeshak) is the government's way of putting experienced ITI tradespeople into training roles at state polytechnics and ITI colleges, where they teach the next generation of technical workers. If you have an ITI certificate and three or more years of actual hands-on experience in your trade, this recruitment is specifically built for people like you.

726 posts across 10 trades — and the Electrician/Wireman trade alone accounts for 252 of them. That is a significant number for a single recruitment cycle in Bihar. The last time BTSC ran a similar instructor recruitment, the application numbers ran into the lakhs, but the actual qualified candidate pool was much smaller because many applicants couldn't meet the experience and CITS requirements. If your documents are in order, your competition is lower than the raw application numbers suggest.

The CITS Requirement — The Part That Catches People Off Guard

The most common reason ITI candidates get rejected at document verification for instructor posts is the CITS certificate. CITS stands for Craft Instructor Training Scheme — it's a one-year programme run by DGET (Directorate General of Employment and Training) that trains ITI tradespeople specifically in how to teach their trade, not just perform it. If you have an ITI + 3 years experience but no CITS, you are not eligible for most trades under this recruitment.

Where do you get CITS? The programme is offered at Central Training Institutes (CTIs) across India — in Kanpur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and others. It's a residential programme. If you don't have CITS yet, you cannot apply now, but you can plan for the next cycle. If you already have CITS, your competition just dropped significantly — most ITI-holders in Bihar don't have it.

One important note: check your specific trade's notification PDF (Advertisement 14/2026 to 23/2026 on btsc.bihar.gov.in). Some trades may have alternative pathways — a Diploma route with 1 year experience, for example — where CITS requirements may differ. Don't assume your trade follows the same rules as Electrician or Fitter.

Salary Reality — What ₹4,200 Grade Pay Means in 2026

The pay scale listed is ₹9,300–₹34,800 with Grade Pay ₹4,200. In the 7th Pay Commission structure, this maps to Pay Level 6. When you add Dearness Allowance (current DA rates for Bihar state government employees), HRA based on your posting location, and other statutory allowances, the starting in-hand salary for a BTSC Instructor comes to approximately ₹28,000–₹35,000 per month.

That figure may not look dramatic, but the job is permanent — meaning pension, gratuity, medical coverage, and leave encashment over a career. For someone who has been working as a contract technician or in a private workshop with no job security, the lifetime value of a permanent state government job with pension is significantly higher than the monthly salary comparison suggests. A private sector technician earning ₹25,000 with no EPF, no pension, and no job security is worse off in the long run than a state government instructor at ₹30,000 with full benefits.

The Written Test — 100 Questions, No Surprises

BTSC's CBT for instructor posts is 100 MCQ questions in 2 hours. The split is 80 questions on your specific trade knowledge and 20 on General Studies. The negative marking is -0.25 per wrong answer.

The trade knowledge section tests you on the technical topics your trade covers at the ITI level — not engineering degree level, but working-knowledge level. If you've been in the trade for 3+ years, 60–70% of the questions should feel familiar. The remaining 30–40% cover theory aspects that daily shopfloor work sometimes lets you forget — IS codes, safety standards, tool specifications, circuit diagrams, measurement theory. A focused revision of your trade's ITI curriculum for 6–8 weeks is enough preparation for most candidates.

General Studies is straightforward: current affairs from the last 6 months, basic Indian polity and constitution, Bihar-specific geography and governance, and science fundamentals. Spend 20–30 minutes per day on a current affairs source and you'll cover this section adequately.

Aim for 68–72+ marks out of 100 for a safe score in the General/EWS category. OBC candidates should target 62–68+. These are estimates based on previous BTSC recruitment patterns — actual cutoffs are published after results.

Experience Certificate — Get This Right Before You Apply

The experience requirement is 3 years for the ITI route. This experience must be in a recognized industry or government institution — meaning your employer needs to be a company registered under the Factories Act or a recognized government establishment. Informal workshop experience, self-employment, or experience at unregistered shops generally does not qualify.

Your experience certificate must be on the employer's official letterhead, signed by the authorized signatory (typically the HR Manager or Owner), specifying: your name, designation, trade, dates of employment (from–to), and a statement that the establishment is recognized/registered. Get this letter notarized if possible — BTSC DVs have been known to reject experience certificates that look informal. If your employer has changed since your ITI days, gather certificates from each employer to total 3 years.

Why This Recruitment Matters for Bihar's ITI-Qualified Workforce

Bihar has been expanding its ITI and polytechnic infrastructure rapidly — new campuses in districts that previously had no technical education institutions. The instructor shortage at these institutions has been a genuine problem. This 726-post recruitment is part of Bihar's effort to staff these institutions with qualified, experienced tradespeople who can actually teach — not just academics with theoretical backgrounds. As a BTSC Instructor, you would be teaching 15–25 students per batch, demonstrating practical techniques, maintaining workshop equipment, and assessing student work. It is a meaningful role for someone who has spent years mastering their trade and wants to pass that knowledge on in a stable, pensioned career.
