Coal India Limited is the world's largest coal-producing company and a Maharatna PSU under India's Ministry of Coal. It operates through eight wholly-owned mining subsidiaries spread across the coal-bearing states — Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, and Telangana — and is responsible for meeting a significant share of India's energy raw material demand. A Management Trainee joining CIL in the Mining discipline will work at colliery level in these subsidiaries, gaining hands-on experience in underground and surface mining operations, mine safety management, ventilation systems, strata control, and mine planning — before moving into executive responsibilities.
This advertisement (No. 01/2026, dated 05 May 2026) is specifically for the Mining discipline only — 276 Management Trainee posts at E-1 grade. The selection is entirely based on GATE-2025 score in Mining Engineering (Paper Code: MN). Only GATE 2025 is valid — GATE 2024 and GATE 2026 scores are not accepted for this cycle.

- Marks: Minimum 60% aggregate (55% for SC/ST candidates).
- GATE Score: Valid GATE-2025 score in Mining Engineering — Paper Code MN. This is non-negotiable. Only the GATE 2025 examination is accepted; scores from GATE 2024 or GATE 2026 are not eligible for this recruitment cycle.

Selection Process
There is no separate written exam conducted by Coal India. Selection is based entirely on your GATE-2025 MN score:
- Applications are screened for eligibility (degree, marks, valid GATE-2025 MN score, age).
- Candidates are shortlisted at a 1:3 ratio — meaning 3 candidates are called per vacancy, category-wise and in descending order of GATE merit.
- In case of tie on GATE score: the candidate with the higher degree percentage is preferred. If still tied: the older candidate (by date of birth) gets preference.
- Shortlisted candidates go through Document Verification and Initial Medical Examination.
No group discussion or interview is conducted by CIL.
Service Bond — Important
Before joining, every selected candidate must execute a service bond of ₹3,00,000 plus applicable GST. The bond obligation is to serve CIL or its subsidiaries for a minimum of 60 months (5 years) from the date of joining. To manage this, CIL deducts ₹5,000 per month from your salary toward the bond amount, and this deducted sum is refunded to you without interest once you complete the 5-year period. If you leave before 5 years for any reason, you must repay the outstanding bond amount before your relieving order is issued.
Factor this carefully if you are simultaneously preparing for UPSC or other competitive exams where a joining date might conflict with the bond period.
Application Fee
Despite the GATE-based selection process, the application fee is not waived for General/OBC/EWS candidates. General, EWS, and OBC-NCL candidates pay ₹1,180 (₹1,000 application fee + ₹180 GST). SC, ST, PwBD, and existing CIL/subsidiary employees are exempt. Payment is online only and non-refundable. Apply at coalindia.in between 08 May and 07 June 2026 (6:00 PM).
