HPCL Refineries Division — What Is Being Offered Here
This apprenticeship is specifically for HPCL's Refineries Division — meaning training happens at either the Mumbai Refinery (Mahul, Mumbai) or the Visakhapatnam Refinery (Vizag). These are not small facilities. Mumbai Refinery has a capacity of 7.5 MMTPA and produces the full range of petroleum products including specialty products for aviation and defense. Vizag Refinery (9.5 MMTPA) is one of India's largest single-train refineries. The 250 Graduate Apprentice posts are for engineering graduates — B.E./B.Tech in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Civil, and similar disciplines. Unlike trade apprenticeships, Graduate Apprentices work at a higher technical level — process engineering, maintenance planning, quality control, and project execution rather than purely operational tasks.
Graduate Apprentice Stipend and What the Year Looks Like
HPCL Graduate Apprentices receive a stipend as per the Apprentices Act for Graduate Apprentices — currently ₹9,000 per month (may be higher if HPCL pays above the statutory minimum, which some large PSUs do). The 1-year apprenticeship at a Maharatna refinery covers: process monitoring in crude distillation and secondary processing units, maintenance procedures for rotating equipment (pumps, compressors, heat exchangers), quality control lab operations for product specification testing, project management for small capital items, instrumentation calibration, and environmental compliance monitoring. The refinery environment — continuous operations, shift-based work culture, safety protocols, PTW systems — is something textbook-educated engineers find genuinely different from their college understanding.

HPCL, IOCL, and BPCL conduct their own officer-grade recruitment exams, and candidates who have done an apprenticeship at one of their refineries have practical operational knowledge that others lack. The HPCL Engineer Officer written exam specifically tests refinery process knowledge, and a year at Mumbai or Vizag refinery gives you direct familiarity with the units, terminology, and safety standards being tested. Second, the network value is real — a year at a Maharatna company's flagship refinery lets you build professional contacts within HPCL, making your application for permanent positions recognizable rather than anonymous. Third, 250 seats is a reasonable number across two large refineries — your chances of placement are much better than at a competitive PSU written exam.
Who Is Eligible and Application Process
B.E./B.Tech in relevant engineering disciplines from a recognized university, with minimum marks (typically 55–60% aggregate — check the official notification for exact cutoff). No work experience required — this is for fresh engineering graduates or those within a few years of graduation. Age limit is generally up to 25–28 years. Selection is merit-based on academic marks — no separate written test. Applications are typically submitted through the NAPS portal or HPCL's official careers portal. Given that Mumbai and Vizag are the only refinery locations, candidates should be genuinely prepared for either city posting.
