Forensic science M.Sc. graduates in India face an unusual problem: the field they studied for is underfunded in terms of government jobs. UPSC and SSC have thousands of vacancies every year. Forensic government posts — the ones that actually match your degree — number in the hundreds across the entire country, spread across organisations that recruit inconsistently.
But the jobs that do exist pay reasonably well, carry government security, and often offer work that directly uses your forensic training. This article compares every major forensic science government job in India — salary, job type, vacancy frequency, and what each organisation is actually like to work for.

The Landscape: How Many Forensic Government Jobs Exist?
India has forensic laboratories at three levels:
- Central level: CFSL (under Ministry of Home Affairs, 7 labs across India), NFSU (National Forensic Sciences University, Gandhinagar and campuses), and CBI's forensic division
- State level: Every state has a State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) or equivalent. Some states like Delhi, MP, UP, Maharashtra run large, active labs. Others are significantly smaller.
- Specialised: DRDO has forensic components. AIIMS and major hospitals run forensic medicine departments (though those are medical roles, not analytical forensic science).
Recruitment at all levels is infrequent and often delayed. A year with 200 central forensic vacancies across all organisations would be considered a busy year. Understanding each employer's pattern is as important as knowing the salary.
CFSL — Central Forensic Science Laboratory
CFSL operates under the Directorate of Forensic Science Services (DFSS), Ministry of Home Affairs. There are 7 regional CFSL labs: Hyderabad (HQ), New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Pune, and Bhopal. CFSL handles high-profile cases — CBI investigations, central government cases, and inter-state crime cases that state labs refer upward.
CFSL Pay and Recruitment
| Post | Pay Level | Pay Scale | Approx. In-Hand (55% DA) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scientific Assistant (SA) | Level 6 | ₹35,400 – ₹1,12,400 | ~₹62,000–₹66,000/month |
| Junior Scientific Officer (JSO) | Level 7 | ₹44,900 – ₹1,42,400 | ~₹78,000–₹84,000/month |
| Senior Scientific Officer (SSO) | Level 10 | ₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500 | ~₹1,00,000–₹1,08,000/month |
In-hand estimates include 55% DA on basic pay + HRA (24% for Class X cities) + Transport Allowance, minus NPS (10%). Actual figures vary by city and individual allowance claims. Source: 7th CPC pay scales + current DA rate.
CFSL Scientific Assistant posts have historically been recruited through SSC (Staff Selection Commission) — specifically through the SSC Scientific Assistant recruitment cycle. This means the selection is written test + skill test based, not just interview. The competition is significantly higher than a state lab interview, but you get a permanent central government job with NPS, HRA, and full 7th CPC benefits.
Vacancy frequency: CFSL Scientific Assistant vacancies come through SSC once every 2–3 years, sometimes longer. The 2018 SSC Scientific Assistant recruitment was followed by a long gap. If you're waiting specifically for CFSL, have alternate targets.
Delhi FSL — Forensic Science Laboratory, GNCTD
Delhi FSL operates under the Government of NCT of Delhi. It's one of the most active state labs in India by volume — Delhi Police handles an enormous daily case intake, and FSL examines physical evidence from all of it. Six divisions: Biology, Cyber Forensic, Physics, Chemistry, Ballistics, Lie-Detection.
Delhi FSL Pay
| Post | Monthly Pay | Annual | Job Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Scientific Assistant (JSA) | ₹42,632 | ₹5,11,584 | Contract |
| Junior Scientific Officer (JSO) | ₹68,697 | ₹8,24,364 | Contract |
These are consolidated contract salaries. No DA, no HRA separately — the consolidated amount is what you receive. No NPS contribution, no pension. The contract nature means the salary doesn't grow with DA revisions over time. That said, Delhi FSL has a consistent track record of re-releasing contract batches: 77 JSA posts in December 2024, 26 posts in December 2025. Renewals happen, though they're not guaranteed.
Key advantage: Vacancy frequency is the highest of any forensic government employer in India. FSL Delhi recruits every 12–18 months. If you want to enter forensic government service quickly, this is the most accessible pathway.

NFSU — National Forensic Sciences University
NFSU (Gandhinagar, Gujarat) is India's only central university dedicated entirely to forensic science. It operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs and has campuses expanding to Delhi, Goa, Tripura, and others. NFSU has both academic (faculty) and administrative/technical posts.
NFSU Technical/Administrative Pay
| Post | Pay Level | Basic Pay | Approx. In-Hand (55% DA) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section Officer | Level 8 | ₹47,600 – ₹1,51,100 | ~₹82,000–₹88,000/month |
| Assistant Registrar | Level 10 | ₹56,100 – ₹1,77,500 | ~₹97,000–₹1,05,000/month |
| Junior Assistant | Level 2 | ₹19,900 – ₹63,200 | ~₹35,000–₹38,000/month |
In-hand estimates for central university pay: includes 55% DA + HRA (Class X city 24% for Gandhinagar) + TA, minus 10% NPS. Approximate — verify against current DA notification.
NFSU Section Officer is one of the highest-CTR article topics on our site (11% CTR on the PYP article, 2.62% CTR on the salary article). The competition from coaching sites is low because NFSU is a specialised institution. The post requires graduation + experience for most grades, making it accessible to a wider range of science graduates.
Vacancy frequency: NFSU releases notifications irregularly — roughly once every 1.5–2 years for technical/admin posts. The selection process includes a written exam, which adds a preparation dimension that FSL interviews don't require.
MP Forensic Lab — Madhya Pradesh State Forensic Science Laboratory
MP's SFSL is one of India's larger state forensic labs. Based in Sagar, with regional labs across the state. It handles evidence from MP Police and state agencies. MP SFSL has driven 775 clicks/month on RojgarDekho — there's genuine search interest, likely from MP-based forensic graduates.
MP FSL Pay (7th CPC State Scale)
| Post | Pay Scale | Approx. Monthly In-Hand | Job Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lab Technician | Level 5 (State 7th CPC equivalent) | ~₹42,000–₹48,000 | Regular (state government) |
| Scientific Officer | Level 7–8 (state equivalent) | ~₹58,000–₹72,000 | Regular (state government) |
