BSNL was once a punchline in India's telecom story — the state-run operator that lost ground to Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone. But the narrative has changed dramatically. With a Rs 1.64 lakh crore revival package from the government, 4G deployment across India, and upcoming 5G rollout, BSNL is rebuilding itself as a serious telecom player. The company is recruiting 120 Senior Executive Trainees through GATE scores, and for engineering graduates who want to be part of India's largest telecom infrastructure rebuild, this is a rare PSU opportunity that combines job security with genuinely challenging technical work.
What Senior Executive Trainees Do at BSNL
SETs join at the E2 executive grade and undergo a one-year training period rotating through BSNL's telecom operations — optical fiber network planning and deployment, mobile tower site engineering, broadband infrastructure management, and switching and transmission systems. After training, you are assigned to a Telecom Circle based on vacancy and preference. Your work involves managing the technical backbone that delivers telephone, broadband, and mobile services to millions of subscribers.
The current focus at BSNL is 4G network deployment using indigenous technology (TCS-developed core network), fiber-to-the-home expansion in urban areas, and strengthening rural connectivity where BSNL remains the only operator with presence. As an SET, you could be working on deploying new 4G towers in remote villages, configuring optical line terminals for FTTH customers, or managing the transition of legacy 2G/3G infrastructure to modern standards.
Salary — PSU Grade With Full Benefits
SETs enter at the E2 pay scale with a starting basic pay of Rs 50,000 in the range of Rs 50,000-1,60,000. With DA, HRA, perquisites, and performance-related pay, the gross monthly salary is approximately Rs 65,000-80,000. BSNL benefits include company leased accommodation or HRA, medical reimbursement, LTC, group insurance, superannuation benefits, and vehicle loan facility. The total CTC at entry level is approximately Rs 12-15 lakh per annum — competitive with many private sector engineering roles and significantly better when you factor in job security and pension.
Selection Through GATE
BSNL recruits SETs based on valid GATE scores in relevant engineering disciplines — Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science, Electrical, and Civil Engineering (for infrastructure roles). There is no separate BSNL examination. Your GATE score determines your ranking, and shortlisted candidates are called for document verification and medical examination. If you have already qualified GATE for PSU recruitment, this BSNL notification is a direct application opportunity.
Career Growth
E2 (SET) to E3 (SDE) to E4 (JTO Senior) to E5 (STS) and upward through E6 (JAG) to E7 (SAG) and higher administrative grades. Each promotion brings a pay scale jump. Senior BSNL executives at E7-E8 level earn Rs 1,50,000-2,00,000+ per month. BSNL also offers deputation opportunities to the Department of Telecommunications, TRAI, and international telecom bodies.
