India Post's Gramin Dak Sevak recruitment for 28,635 positions is the largest postal recruitment in recent memory and one of the largest government recruitments of any kind currently active in India. GDS positions cover Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM), and Dak Sevak across rural post offices in every state. For 10th pass candidates who want a government-affiliated job with a posting in their own village or nearby area, GDS is the most accessible entry point into the postal system.
What GDS Workers Actually Do
A Branch Postmaster runs a small rural post office — often a single-room operation in a village. You handle letter and parcel delivery, sell stamps and postal stationery, process money orders, manage savings account transactions (India Post has more savings accounts than any bank), distribute pension payments, and increasingly handle digital payment services through the India Post Payments Bank. ABPMs assist the BPM and handle the post office in their absence. Dak Sevaks deliver mail in their assigned area — a daily route covering several villages.
The work hours are typically 4-5 hours per day, making this a part-time government engagement rather than a full-time job. This allows GDS workers to pursue farming, small business, or other activities alongside their postal duties.
Compensation — TRCA, Not Regular Salary
GDS workers receive Time-Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA), not a regular government salary. BPM TRCA ranges from Rs 12,000-14,500 per month. ABPM and Dak Sevak TRCA ranges from Rs 10,000-12,000. This is supplemented by DA (revised periodically) and other allowances. GDS workers are not regular government employees — they are classified as "extra-departmental agents" with a distinct service condition. However, they receive paid leave, gratuity after discharge, and group insurance coverage.
Selection — Merit Based, No Exam
10th pass from a recognized board with marks in Mathematics, Language, and other subjects. Selection is purely on merit — a formula based on your 10th class marks (with specific weightage to different subjects). No written examination, no interview. The simplicity of selection makes this accessible to candidates who cannot afford coaching or multiple exam attempts. Apply for circles near your home — the posting is typically within 10-15 km of your declared address.
From GDS to Regular Postal
GDS can apply for regular postal positions (Postman, Mail Guard) through departmental quota — 50% of Postman/MG vacancies are reserved for GDS. Once you become a regular postal employee, you enter the standard government pay scale with full benefits including pension. Many current postal officers started their careers as GDS. With 28,635 posts, this correction form window is your last chance to ensure your application is error-free before the merit list is prepared.
