At 14,000 feet above sea level, where the wind cuts through every layer of clothing and temperatures drop to minus thirty, the men guarding India's border with China still need a haircut. They still need clean uniforms. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force has released a recruitment notification for Constable (Barber) and Constable (Washerman) — two tradesman posts that most job seekers scroll past without a second thought. That is a mistake. These are permanent central government positions with the same pension, medical benefits, and pay scale as any other ITBP constable, and the competition is significantly lower than general duty recruitment.
What ITBP Actually Does and Where You Will Serve
ITBP is not just another paramilitary force. It is specifically mandated to guard India's 3,488-kilometre border with China, stretching from Ladakh in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east. ITBP personnel are posted at some of the most inhospitable locations on earth — the Karakoram Pass, Demchok, Tawang, Bum La. As a constable tradesman, you will be attached to a border outpost or a battalion headquarters, providing essential services to the jawans stationed there. The barber keeps hundreds of men groomed to military standards. The washerman ensures uniforms, bedding, and other fabric items are cleaned and maintained in conditions where even water freezes in pipes.
Do not assume these are soft postings. You are a uniformed ITBP constable first and a tradesman second. You undergo the same basic military training, you carry a weapon when required, and during operational emergencies, you can be assigned any duty that the commanding officer deems necessary. The difference is that your primary daily responsibility revolves around your trade rather than border patrolling.
Pay Scale and Benefits at Constable Level
Constable tradesmen are placed at Pay Level 3 under the 7th Central Pay Commission, with a basic pay band of Rs 21,700 to Rs 69,100. For someone entering with a 10th pass qualification and a trade certificate, the starting salary with dearness allowance, ration money, and uniform allowance comes to roughly Rs 28,000-32,000 per month. But here is where ITBP postings become genuinely lucrative — high altitude allowance. Personnel posted above 9,000 feet receive additional monthly allowances ranging from Rs 5,300 to Rs 25,000 depending on the exact altitude and classification of the area. A constable posted at a high-altitude border outpost can realistically take home Rs 40,000-50,000 per month, which is exceptional for a 10th pass government job.
Beyond salary, you receive free rations, free accommodation (barracks), free medical treatment for yourself and your family at ITBP hospitals, canteen facilities at subsidized rates, annual leave, and a pension after 20 years of service. The Central Armed Police Forces group insurance scheme provides life cover, and education allowances help if you have children studying.
Eligibility and Selection Process
The minimum educational qualification is 10th pass from a recognized board. For the barber post, you need either a certificate from a recognized institute or one year of practical experience in the trade. For the washerman post, similar trade experience or certification is required. The age limit is typically 18-23 years with standard relaxations for reserved categories. Physical standards include minimum height of 170 cm for general male candidates, with proportional chest measurements.
The selection process involves a Physical Efficiency Test (running, long jump, high jump), a written examination covering general awareness, mathematics, and reasoning, a trade test where you demonstrate your actual skill, and a medical examination. The trade test is crucial — this is where you prove you can actually do the job. For barbers, expect to demonstrate different haircut styles and shaving techniques. For washermen, expect to handle different fabric types and demonstrate washing and pressing skills.
Career Growth and Long-Term Prospects
Starting as a constable does not mean you remain a constable forever. ITBP has a structured promotion pathway — Constable to Lance Naik, then Naik, Head Constable, and Assistant Sub-Inspector through departmental exams and seniority. Each promotion brings a jump in pay level. A Head Constable reaches Pay Level 4, and an ASI reaches Pay Level 5. Some constables who perform exceptionally well and pass the limited departmental examination can even reach Sub-Inspector and Inspector ranks over a full career. You also have opportunities to apply for sports quota promotions, skill-based courses, and deputation to other central organizations. For a 10th pass candidate from a small town, this is a genuine pathway to a dignified, well-paying career with national service at its core.
