If you want to become an officer in India's paramilitary forces — BSF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB, or CISF — without going through the NDA or CDS route, the UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant examination is your path. With 349 posts across all five Central Armed Police Forces, this examination selects officers who will command companies of armed personnel, manage border security operations, handle internal security duties, and lead men in some of the most challenging operational environments in the country.
What an Assistant Commandant Does
An Assistant Commandant is equivalent to a Captain in the Army — it is a leadership position from day one. In BSF, you command a company of 100+ jawans guarding the India-Pakistan or India-Bangladesh border. In CRPF, you lead counter-insurgency operations in J&K, Naxal areas, or the Northeast. In ITBP, you command a post on the China border at 14,000+ feet. In CISF, you head the security detachment at airports, nuclear plants, or critical infrastructure. In SSB, you manage the Indo-Nepal or Indo-Bhutan border with its unique open-border challenges.
The work is operationally intense. You conduct foot patrols, set ambushes against infiltrators, manage checkpoints, coordinate with state police and Army units, handle civic action programmes in your area, and maintain the morale and discipline of the forces under your command.
Salary — Officer-Level from Entry
Pay Level 8 (Rs 47,600 basic) plus Military Service Pay equivalent, DA, HRA, and various operational allowances. In-hand salary starts at approximately Rs 60,000-75,000, going up significantly with field area, high-altitude, and counter-insurgency allowances. Government accommodation, vehicle allowance for officers, free medical, and canteen facilities. Over a career, CAPF officers reach Commandant (equivalent to Colonel), DIG, IG, and ADG ranks with Pay Levels 12-15.
Exam Pattern
Written examination with two papers: General Ability and Intelligence (English comprehension, general studies, basic numeracy) and General Studies, Essay, and Comprehension. Total 400 marks written + 150 marks Physical/Medical/Interview. Candidates who clear the written exam undergo a Physical Efficiency Test (100m run, 800m run, long jump, shot put) and a personal interview. UPSC CAPF has a reputation for being more scoring than Civil Services but less competitive — approximately 3-4 lakh candidates appear for 349 posts, compared to 10 lakh+ for Civil Services.
Who Should Apply
Graduation from any recognized university. Age 20-25 years. Physically fit with good eyesight. This exam is ideal for candidates who want a leadership role in security forces but find NDA/CDS/IMA entry too competitive or age-barred. The CAPF AC exam is conducted annually, and with 349 posts, the probability of selection per applicant is significantly better than most other UPSC examinations.
