722 Excise Constable Posts — What Aabkari Sipahi Actually Does
Excise Constable — or Aabkari Sipahi — is one of those government jobs that people apply for without understanding what the work involves. Let me be clear: this is a law enforcement role in the Excise Department. Your job is to prevent illegal manufacturing, sale, and transport of alcohol and narcotics in Uttar Pradesh. You will be posted at checkpoints on state borders, at licensed liquor shops for compliance checks, and will conduct raids on illegal distilleries. The work involves night duties, surprise raids at 3 AM in rural areas, dealing with smugglers, and filing cases under the UP Excise Act. It is not a desk job. It is not a comfortable posting. But it is a permanent government job with a salary that starts at Rs.25,000-32,000 in hand and grows to Rs.45,000+ within 10 years.
Salary — What You Actually Take Home
Excise Constable enters at Pay Level 3 in UP state pay matrix with basic pay Rs.21,700. With DA at roughly 50% (Rs.10,850), HRA depending on posting city (8-24% of basic), Transport Allowance Rs.3,600, and other allowances, the in-hand salary for a new Excise Constable is approximately Rs.25,000-32,000 per month. In addition, you get government housing (or HRA if quarters unavailable), medical reimbursement, Leave Travel Concession, and NPS retirement benefits. Excise department officers sometimes get special duty allowance during festival seasons (Holi, Diwali) when illegal liquor activity peaks. After promotion to Head Constable (Level 4, 8-10 years), salary jumps to Rs.32,000-38,000. Promotion to Sub Inspector (Level 6) pushes it to Rs.42,000-50,000.
Physical Standards — Height and Chest Are Strictly Enforced
Unlike some exams where physical standards are relaxed, Excise Constable physical requirements are strictly enforced because the job involves physical confrontation during raids. Male candidates need minimum 167.6 cm height and chest 80 cm unexpanded / 85 cm expanded. Female candidates need 152 cm height. There is no chest measurement for females. These measurements are taken with shoes off and chest stripped — no room for fudging. If you are even 0.5 cm short, you are rejected on the spot. There is no appeal. For OBC/SC/ST candidates from UP, there may be slight relaxation as per state rules — check the notification carefully.
PET 2025 — The Gateway You Cannot Skip
Like every UPSSSC recruitment, PET 2025 score is mandatory. No PET = no application. PET is the Preliminary Eligibility Test that UPSSSC uses as a screening mechanism. You should have already cleared PET 2025 before this notification dropped. If you have not taken PET or your score is invalid, you cannot apply for this recruitment — no exceptions. The application fee is Rs.25 for all categories, which is the lowest fee in any government recruitment.
Career Growth — Constable to Inspector
Excise Constable promotion path: Constable (Level 3) → Head Constable (Level 4, 8-10 years) → Sub Inspector (Level 6, departmental exam or 15-18 years seniority) → Inspector (Level 7). Some officers also get deputation to enforcement squads where the work is more investigative. The Excise Department is smaller than the Police Department, which means promotions are relatively faster — a dedicated officer can reach SI level in 12-15 years compared to 18-20 years in regular police. The flip side is fewer total posts at higher levels.
