RPSC RAS Syllabus 2026: Prelims Exam Pattern, Topics & Preparation Guide

  • Prelims: 150 MCQs, 200 marks, 3 hours — 29 November 2026
  • Rajasthan GK dominates: ~60% of the paper — this is the real differentiator
  • Negative marking: 1/3 mark deducted for each wrong answer

By RojgarDekho Team | Updated: June 2026

Most candidates preparing for RPSC RAS 2026 make the same mistake — they study Indian GK thoroughly and treat Rajasthan GK as a secondary topic. That's backwards. The RAS Prelims paper is designed to filter on Rajasthan-specific knowledge. A candidate who scores 90% in general sections but 60% in Rajasthan GK loses to someone with the reverse pattern. Start with Rajasthan.

Each question carries unequal marks. Rajasthan-specific sections typically carry more marks per question than general sections — verify the exact mark distribution from your admit card when released.

⚠️ Negative Marking Strategy
At 1/3 negative marking, random guessing loses more than it gains. Only guess if you can eliminate 2 options confidently. If unsure between 3 options, skip. Unanswered questions score 0 — wrong answers score −0.67.

RPSC RAS Mains — Overview (After Clearing Prelims)

The Prelims is a qualifying screen — your Mains marks decide the final merit. Mains has 4 papers:

PaperSubjectMarksType
Paper 1General Studies — History, Art, Culture, Literature, Tradition of Rajasthan200Descriptive
Paper 2General Studies — Indian Polity, Economics, Geography, Environment, Science200Descriptive
Paper 3General Studies — Current Affairs, Governance, Management200Descriptive
Paper 4General Hindi + General English200Language
InterviewPersonality Test100Oral

Total Mains + Interview = 900 marks. Your rank in the final merit list is based on Mains + Interview only. Prelims is just the gate.

Subject-Wise Preparation Strategy

Rajasthan History — the biggest section

Focus on the medieval Rajput period (Mewar, Marwar, Jaipur). Cover the 1857 revolt's role in Rajasthan and the integration of princely states (1948–1956). L.P. Mathur's book on Rajasthan History is widely used. Avoid memorizing dates — focus on events and their significance.

Rajasthan Art & Culture

This is one section where coaching institutes often fall short. Go directly to the Rajasthan Board Class 10–12 textbooks for art and culture. They cover the exact topics in the format RPSC asks. Don't rely on shortcut notes here.

Current Affairs Strategy

Two months before the exam (September–November 2026), start reading the Rajasthan Patrika daily. Focus on state government schemes, court decisions, and sports. 15–20 questions in Prelims typically come from the last 6–12 months of current affairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there a separate paper for Rajasthan GK in RPSC RAS Prelims?

No — RPSC RAS Prelims has only 1 paper. Rajasthan GK is integrated within the single 150-question, 200-mark paper. There is no separate paper for state vs national topics.

Q: What is the RPSC RAS Prelims cut-off typically?

RPSC does not officially publish Prelims cut-offs separately. Based on past patterns and the ratio of applicants to vacancies, estimated cut-off for General category is 90–110 marks out of 200. This varies significantly year to year.

Q: How many candidates appear for RPSC RAS Prelims?

Typically 3–5 lakh candidates appear for RAS Prelims. For 607 posts (assuming Mains ratio of 1:15), approximately 9,000–10,000 candidates qualify Prelims for Mains. Competition is real — average score doesn't qualify.

Q: Should I study Rajasthan GK or General GK first?

Start with Rajasthan GK — specifically History and Art & Culture. These take the longest to memorize and carry the highest marks. Cover General GK (Indian Polity, Economy) in parallel but don't let it crowd out Rajasthan preparation.

Q: Is the RAS Prelims paper bilingual (Hindi + English)?

Yes. The question paper is provided in both Hindi and English. You can answer in your preferred language. Most candidates find the Hindi version clearer for Rajasthan GK questions.

Common Preparation Mistakes — What Kills Candidates in RAS Prelims

After analyzing patterns of candidates who score 80–85 marks (just below the cut-off) versus those who score 110+, these are the systematic mistakes that separate the two groups:

MistakeImpactFix
Studying national current affairs more than Rajasthan current affairs10–15 marks lostGive equal or higher time to Rajasthan Patrika + state events
Reading textbooks linearly without solving past papersNo pattern recognitionAfter every 2 chapters, attempt related PYQ questions
Skipping Rajasthan Art & Culture thinking it's memorization-heavy15–20 marks lostUse visual flashcards and group similar items by geography
Attempting all 150 questions without strategyNegative marking eats into scoreAttempt 120–130 confidently, skip genuinely uncertain ones

How to Study Rajasthan History Effectively

Rajasthan History is the highest-weight section, and it requires a specific approach. Unlike Indian History where you can rely on NCERT narratives, Rajasthan History has many local rulers, battles, and art movements that aren't covered in national textbooks.

The most effective approach: build a mental map of Rajasthan's kingdoms and their geography first. Mewar is in the south (Udaipur/Chittorgarh). Marwar is in the west (Jodhpur). Jaipur (Kachwaha) is in the east-centre. Bikaner (another Rathore branch) is in the north. Once you know which dynasty controlled which geography, the history connects with the geography section automatically.

Specific study sequence: Start with Mewar (Sisodia dynasty, Rana Kumbha, Rana Sanga, Maharana Pratap) → Marwar (Rathore, Rao Jodha, Jaswant Singh) → Jaipur (Man Singh I, Sawai Jai Singh, the city of Jaipur) → 1857 → Integration. Don't jump randomly between dynasties — the chronological and geographic approach builds context.

Rajasthan Geography — Map-First Approach

Rajasthan's geography questions are heavily map-based. If you can't locate a river or national park on a blank map of Rajasthan, you'll struggle with application-level questions that go beyond pure memorization.

RegionKey Features to KnowCommon Exam Questions
Thar Desert (Western Rajasthan)Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner districts; Sam Sand Dunes; wind energy installationsDistricts that share boundary with Pakistan; water sources in Thar
Aravalli Range (Central)India's oldest mountain range; passes (Bali Pass, Pali); Gurushikhar peakHeight of Gurushikhar; which districts Aravalli passes through
Hadoti Plateau (South-East)Chambal River; Ranthambore; Kota city; Black soil areaCrops grown in Hadoti; Chambal tributaries
Marwar Plains (West-Central)Luni River basin; Jodhpur; Mehrangarh fortLuni basin extent; salt plains
Mewat (North-East)Alwar, Bharatpur; Keoladeo Ghana National ParkKeoladeo bird species; Alwar-Bharatpur geography

Rajasthan Economy — Government Schemes (High-Yield)

Questions on government schemes are consistently in the Prelims and are entirely memorization-based with high return on investment. Focus on these specific Rajasthan government schemes:

SchemeKey Detail to RememberDepartment
Mukhyamantri Chiranjeevi Swasthya Bima YojanaCashless treatment up to ₹25 lakh for families; covers all families freeHealth
Indira Gandhi Shahari Rozgar Guarantee YojanaUrban MGNREGA equivalent; 100 days employment guarantee in urban areasLabour
Palanhar YojanaFinancial assistance for orphaned and destitute children — raised by relativesSocial Justice
Rajasthan Mission on Livelihoods (RMAL)Rural livelihoods, SHG formation, NRLM implementationRural Development
PM Kisan Samman Nidhi (implementation in Rajasthan)₹6,000/year in 3 installments; Rajasthan farmers enrolledAgriculture

Mock Test Schedule — November 2026 Exam

By the time you finish topic coverage, you need at least 6–8 full-length mocks before the exam. Here's how to structure them:

PeriodMock StrategyAnalysis Depth
August–September 20261 sectional mock per week (Rajasthan GK only, then Indian GK only)Focus on accuracy — note which sub-topics you're losing marks on
October 20262 full-length mocks per week (all 150 questions, 3 hrs)Check time management — are you finishing in 3 hours?
November 1–15 20263 full-length mocks per week — treat them as real examsCompare scores across mocks; identify stable weak areas
November 16–28 2026No new mocks. Revise only. Sleep 7–8 hours.Final revision of weak sub-topics identified in mocks

What Makes RPSC RAS Different from UPSC Civil Services

Many candidates preparing for UPSC also appear for RPSC RAS. If you're in that group, understanding the key differences helps you prepare more efficiently:

Syllabus depth: UPSC expects depth in every topic — optional subjects, essay writing, nuanced policy analysis. RPSC RAS Prelims is breadth-focused — you need to cover more topics but at a shallower level of analysis. The MCQ format means you need to recognize correct answers, not construct them from first principles.

Rajasthan GK as a moat: UPSC doesn't test state-specific knowledge at the Prelims stage. RPSC RAS is almost the opposite — Rajasthan GK is your biggest opportunity to differentiate. A candidate with strong Rajasthan GK and decent general knowledge beats a strong UPSC general knowledge candidate every time in the RAS Prelims.

Hindi medium candidates: RPSC RAS has a more level playing field for Hindi medium candidates than UPSC. The question paper is bilingual. The Mains and Interview can be conducted in Hindi. Many toppers in recent years have been Hindi medium — the playing field is genuinely even.

Preparation overlap: Your UPSC preparation for Indian History, Polity, Economy, and Geography transfers directly to RPSC RAS. If you're preparing for UPSC, adding 2–3 hours a day of Rajasthan-specific preparation (History, Geography, Art & Culture) is sufficient to attempt RAS Prelims.

Rajasthan Art & Culture — The Most Underprepareed Section

Most candidates spend too much time on Rajasthan History and too little on Art & Culture. The reality is that Art & Culture questions are high-reward because competitors often skip them. Here's what to master:

Music: Maand (royal style), Bawara (devotional), Langas, Manganiyars (professional musician communities). The Manganiyar community from Barmer/Jaisalmer is internationally recognized. RPSC frequently tests awareness of folk music communities and their geographic origin.

Dance: Ghoomar (Bhil tribal, also Rajput courts — Udaipur), Kalbelia (snake charmer community — UNESCO heritage), Gair (Bhil — Holi festival), Terah Taali (Kamad community — seated performance with cymbals), Chari dance (Shekhawati). Learn the dance forms by the community that performs them, not just the name.

Painting Schools: Bundi school (nature, hunting), Kishangarh (romanticized Radha-Krishna, Bani Thani portrait), Jaipur school (Mughal influence, court portraits), Mewar school (religious themes, battle scenes), Bikaner school (Mughal-Rajput blend). Learn the distinctive characteristics, not just the names.

Fairs and Festivals: Pushkar Fair (Ajmer, November — camel/cattle fair + religious pilgrimage), Kumbhalgarh Festival (Rajsamand — folk performances at fort), Marwar Festival (Jodhpur — traditional music), Teej (Jaipur — married women's festival, monsoon), Gangaur (statewide — Gauri worship, marriage).

RPSC RAS सिलेबस 2026: Prelims Exam Pattern, Topics और Preparation Guide

Subject-Wise Preparation Strategy

L.P. Mathur की Rajasthan History book widely used है।

Rajasthan Art & Culture

Current Affairs Strategy

State government schemes, court decisions, sports पर focus करें।

State vs National topics

Q: RPSC RAS Prelims cut-off कितनी रहती है?

Q: RAS Prelims paper bilingual (Hindi + English)

Common Preparation Mistakes — RAS Prelims

Rajasthan current affairs से ज्यादा national current affairs पढ़ना10–15 marks lostRajasthan Patrika + state events को equal या ज्यादा time दें

Mewar south में है (Udaipur/Chittorgarh)।

Study sequence: Mewar (Sisodia dynasty, Rana Kumbha, Maharana Pratap) → Marwar (Rathore, Rao Jodha) → Jaipur (Man Singh I, Sawai Jai Singh) → 1857 → Integration।

Rajasthan Geography — Map-First Approach

Geography questions map-based होते हैं।

RegionKey FeaturesCommon Exam Questions

Rajasthan GK as a moat: UPSC Prelims

Underprepareed Section

Music: Maand (royal style), Bawara (devotional), Langas, Manganiyars (professional musician communities — Barmer/Jaisalmer से, internationally recognized)। RPSC folk music communities और उनके geographic origin test करता है।

Dance: Ghoomar (Bhil tribal, Rajput courts — Udaipur), Kalbelia (snake charmer community — UNESCO heritage), Gair (Bhil — Holi festival), Terah Taali (Kamad community — seated, cymbals), Chari dance (Shekhawati)।

Painting Schools: Bundi (nature, hunting), Kishangarh (romanticized Radha-Krishna, Bani Thani portrait), Jaipur (Mughal influence, court portraits), Mewar (religious themes), Bikaner (Mughal-Rajput blend)।

Fairs and Festivals: Pushkar Fair (Ajmer, November — camel/cattle fair + pilgrimage), Kumbhalgarh Festival (Rajsamand), Marwar Festival (Jodhpur — folk music), Teej (Jaipur — monsoon), Gangaur (statewide — Gauri worship)।

Strategy

Secondary Source: Dr. Mahaveer Goyal की Rajasthan GK books widely used हैं और generally accurate हैं। L.P. Mathur की History book medieval period के लिए standard reference है।

Current Affairs: Rajasthan Patrika का weekly GK supplement और monthly Samsamayiki magazines useful हैं। Digital sources में राजस्थान government की official website पर press releases directly available हैं।

What to Avoid: Random internet articles, unverified YouTube channels,

Time Management — Practical Tips

Prelims preparation से Mains में directly काम आने वाला material: Rajasthan History, Geography, Art & Culture (Mains Paper 1), Indian Polity, Economy, Geography (Mains Paper 2), Current Affairs (Mains Paper 3)। Descriptive writing practice के लिए monthly 4–6 Mains-style answers लिखना start करें।
