When a criminal case goes to trial in Bihar, the person who argues the state's case against the accused is the Prosecution Officer. Bihar PSC is recruiting 300 Prosecution Officers — lawyers who represent the government in criminal courts, presenting evidence and arguing for conviction. If you have an LLB degree and want a legal career that combines courtroom advocacy with government job security, prosecution is a unique professional path that puts you in court every day fighting crime through the legal system.
What Prosecution Officers Do
You appear in court on behalf of the State of Bihar in criminal cases. When someone is arrested for theft, assault, murder, fraud, or any criminal offence, the investigation is done by police but the prosecution — arguing the case in court — is your responsibility. You examine charge sheets filed by police, decide whether the evidence supports prosecution, examine and cross-examine witnesses, present arguments before the judge, and work to secure conviction of guilty individuals. You handle dozens of cases simultaneously across multiple courts.
The work is intellectually demanding. You need to understand criminal law (IPC, CrPC, Evidence Act) thoroughly, think on your feet during cross-examination, construct coherent arguments from often incomplete police investigations, and maintain the ethical standards expected of a government lawyer.
Salary
Pay Level 7-8 (Rs 44,900-47,600 basic). With Bihar DA and allowances, starting in-hand approximately Rs 55,000-65,000. Standard state government benefits — pension/NPS, medical, LTC. Prosecution Officers also receive robe allowance and may get court-related travel allowances.
Eligibility
LLB degree (3-year or 5-year) from a recognized university. Enrollment as an advocate with the Bar Council. Age typically 22-37 years. BPSC conducts selection through Prelims (MCQ — Criminal Law, CrPC, Evidence Act, Constitution), Mains (descriptive papers), and Interview. Strong knowledge of Bihar-specific criminal law provisions, recent Supreme Court and High Court judgments on criminal procedure, and practical advocacy skills are essential.
Career in Prosecution
Prosecution Officer to Senior Prosecution Officer, Additional Public Prosecutor, and eventually Government Advocate or Advocate General's office. Some Prosecution Officers transition to judicial service through separate examinations. With 300 posts, this is a substantial recruitment that will strengthen Bihar's prosecution machinery — a critical need in a state where conviction rates in criminal cases remain below national averages.
