In an era where police work increasingly depends on communication networks, the officers who keep those networks running are the Constable (Operators). Bihar's Central Selection Board of Constables is recruiting 993 operators for Bihar Police — personnel who handle wireless communication equipment, radio sets, and communication infrastructure that connects police stations, patrol vehicles, and command centres across the state.
What Constable (Operator) Does
Operators work in police wireless rooms and communication centres. Your primary duties include transmitting and receiving wireless messages between police stations, relaying emergency alerts during law and order situations, operating VHF/UHF radio equipment, maintaining communication logs, and ensuring the wireless network remains operational 24/7. During major operations — elections, festivals, natural disasters — the communication network becomes the lifeline of police coordination, and operators work extended shifts to maintain constant connectivity.
The work is technical and desk-based — you are not on beat duty or doing traffic management. Instead, you sit in a communication room monitoring multiple radio frequencies, encoding and decoding messages, and ensuring that information flows correctly through the police hierarchy. Basic knowledge of communication equipment, Morse code (though decreasing in importance), and radio operating procedures is essential.
Salary
Pay Level 3 (Rs 21,700-69,100 basic). Bihar state allowances bring starting in-hand to approximately Rs 26,000-30,000. Standard police benefits — quarters, uniform, medical, ESI, pension/NPS. Operators typically work in district police headquarters or state police communication centres, which means better infrastructure and facilities compared to beat-duty constables.
Eligibility
12th pass with knowledge of communication equipment operation. Physical standards follow CSBC norms — height 165 cm for general male. Selection: Physical Efficiency Test, written examination (GK, Hindi, Mathematics, Reasoning, basic communication/electronics knowledge), and medical. The written exam may include questions on radio wave propagation, communication protocols, and basic electronics — prepare accordingly.
Career in Police Communication
Operator to Head Constable (Operator) to ASI through departmental promotion. Experienced operators often become communication in-charges at district level. As Bihar Police modernizes its communication infrastructure — moving from legacy radio to digital networks, satellite communication, and encrypted channels — technically skilled operators become increasingly valuable. With 993 posts, this is a large intake for a specialized technical role in policing.
