When people hear "police constable recruitment," they picture beat duty, traffic management, and routine patrolling. But Bihar Police's Special Branch is a completely different world. The Central Selection Board of Constables has announced 83 constable positions specifically for the Special Branch — the intelligence wing of Bihar Police. If you are selected, you will not be standing at a traffic crossing or filing FIRs. You will be gathering intelligence, conducting surveillance, providing VIP security, and working on matters that regular police officers never see.
What Special Branch Constables Actually Do
The Special Branch handles political intelligence, communal tension monitoring, VIP security assessments, background verification for sensitive appointments, and counter-intelligence operations. As a constable in this branch, your assignments vary from providing security cover for visiting dignitaries and monitoring political gatherings to collecting ground-level intelligence about potential law-and-order situations in your assigned area. Unlike regular police work that is reactive (responding after a crime), Special Branch work is proactive — your job is to prevent incidents before they happen through information gathering and analysis.
You may work in plainclothes rather than uniform, attend public meetings and gatherings to assess security threats, interact with informants, and prepare intelligence reports for senior officers. The work demands discretion, observational skills, and the ability to work independently without constant supervision.
Salary and Benefits
Pay Level 3 (Rs 21,700-69,100 basic), same as regular constables. With Bihar state government allowances, the starting in-hand salary is approximately Rs 26,000-30,000. Special Branch personnel may receive additional allowances for plainclothes duty and intelligence work, though the exact amount depends on departmental policies. Standard police benefits — ESI, EPF, uniform, quarters, and pension — apply.
Eligibility and Selection
12th pass from recognized board. Age 18-25 years with standard relaxations. Physical standards: minimum height 165 cm for general male candidates. Selection involves Physical Efficiency Test (running, long jump, high jump), written examination (General Knowledge, Hindi, Mathematics, Reasoning), and thorough medical and background verification. The background check for Special Branch is more rigorous than regular police — your family history, associations, and character are verified in detail, as you will handle sensitive information.
Career in Intelligence
Special Branch offers a distinct career track. Promotions follow the police hierarchy — Constable to Havildar to ASI to SI — but within the intelligence apparatus. Experienced Special Branch officers are valued across the security establishment and may be deputed to central intelligence agencies or state security details. With only 83 posts, this is a niche recruitment for candidates who prefer intelligence work over conventional policing.
