Railway Group D is the largest single recruitment in Indian Railways — 22,195 Level 1 posts covering Track Maintainer Grade IV, Helper, Porter, Pointsman, Gateman, and other essential roles that keep the railway network physically operational. CEN 09/2025 is the notification that will trigger examinations for candidates across all Railway Recruitment Board zones. If you are 10th pass with an ITI certificate (for some posts), this is the biggest employment opportunity Indian Railways offers at the entry level.
What Group D Railway Workers Do
Track Maintainers walk railway tracks daily, inspecting rails for cracks, checking sleeper conditions, tightening bolts, replacing fishplates, and ensuring tracks are safe for trains running at high speeds. Helpers assist technicians in loco sheds, workshops, and depots. Porters manage platform operations — helping with luggage, crowd management, and train arrival/departure coordination. Pointsmen operate track switching mechanisms at junctions. Gatemen manage level crossings, lowering and raising gates as trains approach. Each role is physically demanding but essential — Indian Railways moves 23 million passengers daily, and Group D workers are the invisible workforce that makes this possible.
Salary and Railway Perks
Pay Level 1 (Rs 18,000-56,900 basic). With DA, HRA, transport allowance, and other railway allowances, starting in-hand is approximately Rs 22,000-28,000. But railway perks multiply the value — free/subsidized rail travel (privilege passes for family), railway quarters, railway hospital medical care, railway school education, canteen facilities, and pension. Group D workers can appear for departmental exams to move to higher levels within the railway system.
Selection Process
Computer Based Test (CBT) covering Mathematics, General Intelligence/Reasoning, General Science, and General Awareness/Current Affairs. 100 questions in 90 minutes. After CBT, Physical Efficiency Test (males: 35 kg lift and carry 100m in 2 minutes + 1000m run in 4:15; females: 20 kg lift and carry + 1000m in 5:40) and Medical examination. With crores of applicants expected, the CBT cutoff is the primary filter — scoring 60-70% should be your target for general category.
The Scale of 22,195 Posts
This is the kind of recruitment that happens once every 3-4 years. The last Group D drive (CEN 01/2019 for 1,03,769 posts) attracted 1.15 crore applicants. CEN 09/2025 with 22,195 posts will still attract massive numbers, but the per-post competition is more manageable than the last mega drive. Prepare seriously, focus on NCERT Science (Classes 8-10) and basic mathematics, and give this exam your absolute best effort.
