Every PCR van racing to an emergency call, every prisoner transport vehicle moving between courts and jails, every VIP escort vehicle in the capital — all are driven by Delhi Police Constable (Drivers). SSC has recruited 737 such positions for Delhi Police. If you hold a valid Heavy Motor Vehicle or Light Motor Vehicle driving license with at least 3 years of driving experience, this is a government job that literally puts you behind the wheel from day one.
What Constable Drivers Do
You drive official Delhi Police vehicles — PCR vans (the emergency response vehicles), staff cars for senior officers, prisoner vans for court production, mobile communication vans, and logistics vehicles. A PCR van driver responds to 100-number calls, rushing to accident sites, crime scenes, and distress calls across Delhi. Staff car drivers transport officers to meetings, court hearings, and official functions. The work requires not just driving skill but situational awareness — you need to navigate Delhi's chaotic traffic while responding to urgent calls, sometimes with sirens blaring.
Salary
Pay Level 3 (Rs 21,700-69,100). With Delhi's generous allowances — 30% HRA, DA, transport allowance, driver allowance — in-hand salary starts at approximately Rs 32,000-38,000. Free uniform, medical at police hospitals, quarters where available. No posting outside Delhi. Overtime for extended duty hours during elections, festivals, and VIP events provides additional income.
Eligibility
10th pass. Valid driving license (HMV or LMV depending on the specific post). Minimum 3 years of driving experience. Physical fitness as per Delhi Police norms. Selection: Computer-Based Test (General Awareness, Maths, Reasoning, Computer Knowledge), Driving Test (practical assessment of driving skill on different vehicle types), Physical Measurement/Endurance Test, and Medical.
Career Growth
Constable (Driver) to Head Constable to ASI through departmental promotion. Skilled drivers may be assigned to VIP protection details — driving for senior officers, judges, or visiting dignitaries — which is both prestigious and comes with additional responsibilities. Some constable drivers eventually qualify for non-driving promotions and transition to regular police duties at higher ranks. The driving skill you develop in Delhi's traffic conditions is genuinely world-class.
