SSC Junior Engineer is one of the most popular engineering examinations in India — the gateway for diploma and degree holders in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical engineering to enter central government organizations as technical officers. With 1,731 tentative vacancies across CPWD, CWC, BRO, MES, DGQA, and other departments, SSC JE 2025 offers engineers the chance to supervise government infrastructure projects that build India's roads, dams, military installations, and public buildings.
Where JEs Are Posted
CPWD (Central Public Works Department) JEs supervise construction of government buildings, roads, and bridges across India. CWC (Central Water Commission) JEs work on dam monitoring, flood forecasting, and water resource management. BRO (Border Roads Organisation) JEs build and maintain roads in border areas and high-altitude regions. MES (Military Engineering Services) JEs handle construction and maintenance of military infrastructure — barracks, airfields, naval dockyard facilities. DGQA JEs inspect quality of defence equipment. Each posting offers a different experience.
Salary
Pay Level 6 (Rs 35,400-1,12,400 basic). With DA, HRA, and transport allowance, starting in-hand ranges from Rs 45,000-60,000 depending on posting city. BRO JEs posted in remote border areas receive additional hardship and field area allowances pushing income to Rs 60,000-75,000. All central government benefits — NPS, CGHS medical, LTC, earned leave encashment.
Exam Pattern
Paper 1 (Computer Based): General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, and Part A — General Engineering (Civil/Mechanical/Electrical based on your discipline). Paper 2 (Descriptive): Engineering subject-specific questions at diploma/degree level. Paper 1 determines initial screening, Paper 2 determines final merit. Focus your preparation on core engineering subjects — RCC, Soil Mechanics, Surveying for Civil; Thermodynamics, Manufacturing for Mechanical; Power Systems, Machines for Electrical.
Career Growth
JE to Assistant Engineer (after departmental exam and experience), then Executive Engineer. In CPWD, career progression can lead to Superintending Engineer and Chief Engineer — positions with Pay Level 13-14. SSC JE is the single largest recruitment for engineering graduates who want government careers in infrastructure, and 1,731 posts make this year's intake one of the biggest.
