Bihar's infrastructure is being rebuilt at a pace the state has not seen since independence. New roads, bridges, irrigation canals, pump houses, and public buildings are being constructed across every district. Ensuring that the mechanical components of this infrastructure — pumps, generators, lifts, HVAC systems, plumbing — are properly installed and maintained requires trained professionals. Bihar Technical Service Commission has announced 493 Work Inspector (Mechanical) positions, and for diploma holders in mechanical engineering, this is a solid technical government career that puts your engineering training to practical use every day.
What Work Inspectors (Mechanical) Do
You inspect mechanical installations in government construction and infrastructure projects. When a new water treatment plant is being built, you verify that the pump specifications match the design requirements, the piping is correctly installed, and the mechanical systems pass commissioning tests. When a government building installs a new generator or lift system, you ensure the installation meets prescribed standards. Existing infrastructure maintenance also falls under your purview — inspecting pump houses, checking boiler installations in government hospitals, and verifying that mechanical equipment in government offices functions correctly.
The work is a mix of field inspection and office documentation. You visit sites, conduct inspections, prepare technical reports, and certify that mechanical work meets standards before payments are released to contractors. This makes you a critical quality control link in the government infrastructure chain.
Salary and Benefits
Pay Level 5-6 (Rs 29,200-35,400 basic). With Bihar state allowances, starting in-hand approximately Rs 36,000-45,000. Technical posts in Bihar government come with standard benefits — NPS, medical, LTC. Field allowance for site visits may also apply. The Bihar government is increasingly investing in technical infrastructure, so the demand for qualified inspectors is growing.
Eligibility
Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized polytechnic is the primary qualification. Some posts may accept B.Tech Mechanical. Age limits follow BTSC norms with standard relaxations. Selection involves a written examination testing mechanical engineering fundamentals — thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, manufacturing processes, machine design, strength of materials — followed by document verification.
Career Path
Work Inspector to Senior Work Inspector, then Assistant Engineer, and eventually Executive Engineer through departmental promotions and additional qualifications. Some Work Inspectors who complete B.Tech while in service are promoted faster to AE positions. With 493 posts, this is a substantial intake that will create a strong cohort of technical officers in Bihar's engineering departments.
