Why HTET Is the Non-Negotiable First Step for Anyone Who Wants to Teach in Haryana

If you want to teach in any government school in Haryana — whether it is a primary school in a village near Hisar or a senior secondary school in Gurugram — you absolutely must have an HTET certificate. There is no workaround, no alternative, no exemption. The Haryana Teacher Eligibility Test is the gateway, and without clearing it, your B.Ed or D.El.Ed degree is essentially a qualification without a destination. The Board of School Education Haryana conducts HTET, and the December 2024 session with re-opened registration in 2025 is an opportunity that candidates who missed the earlier window should not ignore. What makes HTET particularly important in the current landscape is that the certificate is now valid for a lifetime. This was not always the case — it used to be valid for seven years, which meant candidates had to periodically re-qualify. The lifetime validity change is genuinely significant because it means once you clear HTET, you never have to worry about it again. You can take your time preparing for the actual recruitment exams, apply whenever vacancies open up, and your eligibility remains intact. For a state that regularly recruits thousands of teachers through HSSC and other channels, having a valid HTET certificate sitting in your document folder is like having a permanent ticket to the eligibility counter. Without it, you cannot even apply — with it, every Haryana teaching job notification becomes relevant to you.

Understanding the Three Levels — PRT, TGT, and PGT

HTET is structured into three distinct levels, and choosing the right one matters because each level qualifies you for different teaching positions. Level 1 is for Primary Teacher or PRT — this qualifies you to teach classes 1 through 5. The educational requirement is D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education, previously known as JBT) or equivalent, along with graduation. If you enjoy working with young children, shaping their foundational learning in reading, writing, and basic arithmetic, Level 1 is your track. Level 2 is for Trained Graduate Teacher or TGT — this covers classes 6 through 8. You need a graduation degree in the relevant subject along with B.Ed. TGT positions are the backbone of middle school education in Haryana, and they carry a better pay scale than PRT. Level 3 is for Post Graduate Teacher or PGT — this qualifies you for classes 9 through 12. You need a post-graduation degree in the relevant subject along with B.Ed. PGT positions come with the highest pay scale among school teachers, and you get to teach specialized subjects at the senior secondary level. Here is something many candidates do not realize: you can appear for multiple levels in the same sitting if you meet the eligibility for each. So if you have a post-graduation with B.Ed, you can attempt Level 2 and Level 3 both, giving yourself two separate eligibility certificates. That doubles your opportunities when recruitment notifications come out.

The Exam Pattern — No Negative Marking Is a Bigger Deal Than You Think

Each HTET level consists of 150 multiple choice questions carrying one mark each, giving you a total of 150 marks. The exam duration is two and a half hours. Now here is the detail that changes how you approach this exam entirely: there is no negative marking. In an era where almost every competitive exam penalizes wrong answers — SSC, Banking, Railways, even CTET — HTET stands out by not deducting marks for incorrect responses. This means your strategy should be fundamentally different from other exams. You attempt every single question. Even if you have no idea about a particular question, you mark an answer because the worst case scenario is zero marks for that question, not negative marks pulling down your score. The passing requirement is 60 percent — that means 90 marks out of 150 for general category candidates. Reserved categories get a relaxation to 55 percent, which is approximately 82-83 marks. The paper covers Child Development and Pedagogy (30 questions), Language I — Hindi (30 questions), Language II — English (30 questions), and subject-specific questions (60 questions). For PRT level, the subject portion covers Mathematics, Environmental Studies, and related topics. For TGT and PGT, the 60 subject-specific questions are from the subject you choose. The pedagogy section is where most science and math graduates struggle because it requires understanding educational psychology, learning theories, and child development concepts — areas that are not typically covered in a B.Sc or engineering curriculum.

Preparation Strategy That Actually Works for HTET

Having spoken with dozens of candidates who cleared HTET in recent years and those who did not, the pattern is clear. The candidates who fail almost always lose marks in the Child Development and Pedagogy section and Language I (Hindi). Ironically, they tend to do well in their subject — a Math TGT candidate will score 50 out of 60 in Mathematics but lose the exam because they scored 12 out of 30 in pedagogy. The fix is straightforward: invest real time in pedagogy. Read NCERT books on education, understand Piaget's stages of cognitive development, Vygotsky's zone of proximal development, Kohlberg's moral development theory, and the basics of inclusive education. These topics repeat across HTET sessions with remarkable consistency. For Hindi, the exam tests grammar, comprehension, and basic literature — if Hindi was not your medium of instruction, start practicing reading Hindi passages and answering questions about them. For the subject portion, NCERT textbooks from class 6 to 12 are your primary resource. Previous year HTET question papers are genuinely gold — the exam has a tendency to repeat concepts, sometimes even similar questions, across sessions. Solve the last five years of papers and you will start noticing patterns. The Rs.1000 application fee is a one-time investment that is worth making seriously — do not treat this exam casually just because there is no negative marking. The competition is real, with lakhs of candidates appearing for each session.

What Happens After You Clear HTET — The Path to a Permanent Teaching Job

Clearing HTET does not automatically give you a teaching job — this is a common misconception that needs to be addressed directly. HTET is an eligibility test, not a recruitment exam. Once you clear it, you become eligible to apply for teaching positions in Haryana government schools when vacancies are advertised. The actual recruitment is typically handled by HSSC (Haryana Staff Selection Commission) or directly by the Education Department. The recruitment process usually involves a written exam, document verification, and sometimes an interview or teaching demonstration. However, your HTET score can carry weightage in the final merit calculation for some recruitments. The beauty of lifetime validity is that you are now permanently in the eligible pool. Haryana recruits teachers regularly — in recent years, there have been large-scale recruitments of PRT, TGT, and PGT posts across the state. With a valid HTET certificate, you can apply for all of them. The salary for government teachers in Haryana is genuinely attractive. PRT starts at around Level 6, TGT at Level 7, and PGT at Level 8 of the 7th Pay Commission. With Haryana's DA and allowances, a new PRT takes home approximately Rs.40,000-45,000 per month, TGT around Rs.48,000-55,000, and PGT approximately Rs.55,000-65,000. These figures increase substantially with experience and promotions. Teaching in a government school also comes with job security, pension benefits, summer and winter vacations, and the satisfaction of building the next generation in your home state.
