Rajasthan is a state of contrasts — the Thar Desert on one side, the Aravalli forests and Ranthambore tiger reserve on the other. Protecting this diverse ecological landscape requires a dedicated forest service, and the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board is recruiting 259 Foresters. If you are physically fit, love the outdoors, and want a government career that takes you into forests rather than offices, this recruitment is calling your name.
What a Forester Does
Foresters are the frontline officers of Rajasthan's Forest Department. You are assigned a forest beat — a defined area of forest land that you patrol regularly. Your responsibilities include preventing illegal logging and timber smuggling, monitoring wildlife movement and reporting sightings to the Range Forest Officer, checking for forest fires (especially critical in Rajasthan's dry climate), preventing encroachment on forest land, and managing the relationship with forest-fringe communities. In areas like Sariska and Ranthambore, foresters also participate in tiger census operations, wildlife rescue, and anti-poaching patrols.
The work is physically demanding. A typical patrol might involve walking 10-15 kilometres through forest terrain, often in extreme heat or rain. You carry basic equipment — binoculars, GPS device, wireless radio, and in some areas, a firearm for protection against dangerous wildlife. Night patrols to catch poachers and timber smugglers are common, especially during moonless nights when illegal activity peaks.
Salary and Benefits
Pay Level 5 (Rs 29,200-92,300 basic). With Rajasthan state DA, HRA, and forest duty allowances, starting in-hand salary is approximately Rs 38,000-48,000. Forest personnel receive additional allowances for remote posting, ration money, and kit maintenance. Government quarters are provided at range headquarters, and foresters posted in wildlife sanctuaries get accommodation within or near the sanctuary.
Eligibility and Selection
12th pass with Science subjects from a recognized board. Age typically 18-26 years. The physical standards are rigorous — the selection includes a physical endurance test where candidates must complete a long-distance walk or run through forest-like terrain within a specified time. Written examination covers General Knowledge, Rajasthan GK, Science, Mathematics, and Hindi. There may also be a practical test evaluating your ability to identify common tree species and wildlife.
Career Growth
Forester to Range Forest Officer through departmental promotion and exams. Some foresters qualify for the Rajasthan Forest Service through competitive examination, reaching ACF and DFO ranks. A career in forestry offers something no desk job can — you work under open skies, protect endangered species, and preserve ecosystems that millions of species depend on. The 259 posts represent a significant recruitment that will strengthen Rajasthan's forest protection infrastructure.
